bsd rarepair week day six: heart to heart ship: lucy/the guild read on ao3

When the news of Fitzgerald being alive and rising again from the suburbs arrived to Lucy, she didn’t know exactly how to react at the beginning.

A part of her wanted Fitzgerald to stay in the abism he had fallen, because he deserved it. He never had an interested on her besides her ability, and when she failed he tossed her away like an object, so she did thought he pretty much deserved being reduced to no one. But there was another part of her that felt nostalgic, almost hopeful. Not because she remotely wanted to join the new Guild ーor whatever it was named now, but because whenever she wanted or not, it had been her first home.

Home was a weird concept for her. Growing up in an orphanage, being abused and bullied, she had a romanticized concept of a home; a mom, a dad, maybe a sibling, living in a small house, and the parents would love her, they would buy her ice cream and comb her hair, they would made her go to school where she would finds friends and laugh… it didn’t happen, and it never would.

The Guild was a strange kind of home and totally not the best, but a home nonetheless.

Louisa was the first person being kind to her, even thought she was after her ability and Lucy knew it, she was still kind to her. The first person who had showed her some kind of warmness when all she knew was the coldness of the orphanage. Lucy would always feel grateful for it.

Louisa was also the first person Lucy always put attention to. She would sometimes slide a sweet in her food, or made her coffee when she seemed especially stressed. Lucy was fond of Louisa.

Fitzgerald was an eccentric asshole, that was the first thing she thought about him and she maintained that opinion. When she first met him, he spend two hours telling her how rich he was, telling her about his companies and how much they were worth… He didn’t usually looked in her direction unless he needed her, or her ability.

But he was the first person that complimented her tea, and it had make her a little bit happy. She also once caught him looking at her after he talked to his wife, not his usually mocking face, it was more like sad and nostalgic. Lucy didn’t ask, because it lasted barely a second and thought it was her imagination. Little did she knew that it was because his daughter could have been a little bit older than Lucy if she were alive.

Lucy also changed her perception on Fitzgerald one day she was in the same room as him. She was waiting for instructions, and he was talking to his wife. Lucy had this image of a heartless man, only caring about money and himself, but the fondness and warmness in his voice while talking to Zelda taught her he had a heart after all.

Herman was nice. He looked like a loving grandfather, wise and old, Lucy liked him very much. He was mostly quiet, but Lucy enjoyed his presence. He often gave her sweets, and he was the one that gave her the white flower hairpiece she used to wear. He liked peace and quiet so Lucy made sure to not disturb him a lot, but more than once he had take her out of trouble.

Trouble that was usually caused by her endless fights with Mark Twain. Twain and Lucy were both redheads and also shared birthdays, Mitchell once said they might have been twins, but their ages didn’t match.  

Twain was a pain in the ass for her. They argued a lot, but she would be lying if she said she didn’t find him funny and entertaining. They were both redheads, and they liked to compete about everything. Twain and Lucy were often the ones running around, making jokes on each other and disasters whenever they were together, until they destroyed something and Herman had to respond for them. She liked him nevertheless.

Steinbeck was complicated thought. He was an easygoing person, he was calm, but Lucy could never figured out what was going through his mind, and she never asked. But she learned a lot from him with time, about his family and his strong opinion on Fitzgerald, that she shared, but failed to completely understand his feelings.

Lucy didn’t know what was like having a sibling, since the other children in the orphanage always pushed her apart for being different and only having Anne as a company, but she believed Steinbeck was the closest thing she ever had as a brother, and she knew the feeling was one-sided since he had real siblings who he actually cared for. But time to time, he would pat her head and tell her she reminded him of her little sister. After Louisa, she liked him the most.

Lovecraft was the weirdest person. He was always either asleep or terrifying. The first time she met him, she was about to shake his hand when he turned his into tentacles and she screamed her lungs out. He then said Twain told him he had to be friendly, but his concept of being friendly was odd. He was so quiet she usually walked into the room and never noticed him until he speak, or would find him sleeping on the floor. He was incredibly weird by amusing.

Mitchell and Hawthorne were a combo. For people that disliked each other so much, she thought, they did spend a lot of time together. The first day she arrived, Hawthorne sat her on a desk and tried to read the bible to her, saying that it would help her and that i was also education. Lucy never heard the end of it cause she fell asleep on the desk. Hawthorne never seemed to forgive her for it, he never really cared about her, and she didn’t care about him either, but she did respected him.

Mitchell never let go of the fact that she fell asleep on Hawthorne's bible reading and always teased him with it. Lucy thought Margaret was the prettiest girl she’d ever seen, she admired her for it, even though they weren’t close at all.  She had attitude and was elegant, she sometimes found herself trying to imitate the way Margaret walked or the way she drank tea so elegantly.

And lastly, Poe. Poe never left his room, he was quiet and anxious all the time. Lucy never really tried to talk to him, but constantly found herself sitting next to him when they were meetings and had no one else so sit with, and he allowed her while she didn’t speak. She also once let him enter her room, cause he looked distressed and anxious during a party. He let her pet Carl for it, making her completely happy.

The Guild was far from being a family, if she had to be honest. Not like the Agency seemed to her, or even the Port Mafia had more a concept of union than the Guild. They were all separated, had different reasons to be there, different goals and everyone (including her) put their personal expectations and ambitions above anything else. It was not  family, but it was a home.

Each member taught her something different, The Guild was never a family, but it was full of memories and “first times” for her. So when she heard about Fitzgerald trying to rise again, she thought of each member, with some fondness she never knew she had.

Summary: Chuuya’s struggling to sleep as a result of the investigation reopening old wounds and pressing on old scars. So, he goes to Kunikida. —

If Ango could put his hands on that book… he would bring him back.

If he had the certainty that Odasaku could be bought back, he said to himself that he wouldn’t hesitate to write on it and bring him back.

That lone thought was enough sometimes to keep him awake at night. He could go behind the government, talk with Dazai to come up with a plan —Ango knew Dazai would help, and bring him back.

But he couldn’t. Even when he woke up at night, bathed in blood, trembling and sobbing slightly from the nightmares, and the guilt. Guilt he had assumed, and constantly tortured himself with. It was always hard, and sometimes Dazai became the living guilt he felt.

Guilt was not everything that held him back sometimes —when he hadn’t sleep in days, depressed, anxious... , most of what made him back away in those vulnerable times was the thought of Odasaku hating him if he came back.

Ango missed him so much, everyday, every hour… he missed the long conversations they had at Lupin, he missed his gentle eyes and his lazy smile, he missed his strong arms around him and how relaxed and secure he made him feel. And just thinking that Odasaku might be different if he ever came back was horrifying.

He would tell himself it was selfish of him to be afraid of that. That he should be thankful to be able of bring Odasaku back, and that it shouldn’t matter if he hated him. Because it was his fault he was dead in the first place.

So when his co-worker once asked him what he would do if he had The Book on his hands and were able to ask for anything, Ango simply reply “A nap. A very long nap”.
