This week we also went on a BSL tour of the Play Well exhibition at the Wellcome Collection. 

The tour itself was interesting, and the signed discussion afterwards was also interesting.

The one negative was the interpreter doing the voice over. She didn’t do a very good job, so it was very distracting and a bit annoying. She kept saying things that weren’t accurate, and adding in filler that wasn’t necessary and I felt like I missed some of the information because my brain couldn’t cope with being fed two bits of information at the same time. 

I don’t go out much so I have found it exhausting and I’m quite looking forward to not having any plans for the foreseeable future, but I’m glad we did the things we did recently.

Been using Glide to communicate with Watson and so now I really appreciate the fact we both learned the ASL alphabet. It's handy when you can only sign one handed because you're holding your phone! Much easier than trying to finger spell one handed using BSL alphabet!

I got nominated to make a BSL video choosing my favourite signs and then awkwardly had to translate them for people who wanted to know what I was signing (and the same for Watson's video). Which led to giving kiddo a sign name and teaching her how to finger spell her name, so who knows, maybe she'll be inspired to learn BSL!

Another instalment of why Watson is ace: When we get a bus anywhere and I say, "Can your beep if not do the beepy beep?" she automatically knows I mean, "Do you have your debit card for me to borrow if my Oyster card hasn't got enough money on it?" This instalment also features in 'Why I prefer to sign' and probably also 'Why Watson prefers me to sign'.

Learning a bit of ASL! Watson’s got a new Deaf American friend she’s started messaging on Glide (you send short video clips back and forth), so we’re both picking up some ASL. It’ll be more useful for her because she’s going to Roller Con next year and she’s going to meet this girl and her Deaf roller derby team.  But I’m enjoying it because it’s fun learning new languages and comparing different signs. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see how good I have gotten at understanding words fingerspelled in ASL!

Just remembered... I was trying to tell my parents that we couldn’t put tinsel on the tree because the tinsel was too thick. But instead I said, “It’s big too much.” Lol no tinsel, mum, too much bigness. HOWEVER, whilst feeling grateful for how my parents don’t even react when I babble, I realised that sometimes when I babble it’s probably because I’m sort of speaking in BSL order, which might account for why I find it easier to translate things into BSL than some other people.

Also, I’m teaching the entire key stage to sign a song in assembly once a week. This was my first week actually just signing to everyone. I actually didn’t mind doing it at all, and I’m quite comfortable signing in front of people, but having that much attention was a bit much and I’m a chronic blusher, so despite not thinking that I felt too bothered because I know all the kids and there was very few staff members in the hall at the time, by the time assembly had finished I was all hot and red and my palms were sweaty.
