BTS Idol - Late to the Party
It was recommended that I listen to this song. I did...it's so cool. How many 90s references are there? I found very little. Are there more? What's your overall interpretation?

BTS Idol - Late to the Party

why are they looking at me. guys. I didn't walk in here, you put me here i swear 🙌
normal mv notes
notes i took while watching the normal mv !! im very spontaneous with my thoughts so they might be all over the place or just not be understood but it is what it is ٩(ˊᗜˋ*)ഒ
mary antoinette cake:
joon consumes a cake with an illustration of marie antoinette on it.
“let them eat cake” propaganda (can symbolise how people search/find the smallest reasons to hate/spread rumours)
a disconnect between fame, perception, their reality of constantly having to live under a microscope
other; joon finally got to throw a cake in someone’s face rather than getting one thrown at his own (spring day mv reference)
white swan (what could it symbolise in the context of the mv?):
the first appearance of the swan is after the woman with dozens of photos of bangtan, before panning towards jungkook while he does what seems to be showering. it is again later shown after jimin is shown on screen, shirt untied, “disheveled” (even if he may have been bro looks fucking ethereal come here pookie damn ok im getting distracted anyway) in a bed.
the primary symbolisms of a white swan includes love and fidelity, purity and innocence, grace, transformation, and more.
what could this mean ? for jungkook, this could be portrayed in this context as him trying to wash off dirt, trying to hold on to his purity and innocence. it could also be him holding onto his faith and fidelity, staying loyal to his job, life, love. jk is devoted to army, and his duty as an idol, so this scene could also be portrayed as him washing away what he may have been doing in his own time, completely normal things, but having to hide it away ad freshen up to show another side of him to the public eye.
as for jimin, in reference to the scene it could portray his loss of purity and innocence, or trying to hold onto it as he buttons up his shirt later in the mv.
other; in the black swan music video, the “white swan” were the personas that bts put out into the public, for their fans, for the people, what they show to the world, the “perfect” and “idolised” side of them.
taehyung: beaten and bruised
hoba: walking around outside, standing in a bathtub next to a fountain while “watering his surroundings” (seems to be confused, disassociating)
jimin: disheveled in bed
jungkook: showering (maybe washing off the events of the previous night ?)
joon: sitting in a car, eating cake (“let them eat cake")
yoongi: trying to hop a fence (escape ?)
jin: sitting outside, alone, at a table for two with a cup of tea (bro ts man lowkey being a diva i love him sm) (working on trying to find some kind of meaning)
first scene:
a woman is shown holding dozens of polaroids of the members, before throwing them in the air as light flashes.
this woman may have taken photos/recorded the members at the party.
this could symbolize paparazzi, sasaengs, dispatch, etc. making the members feel unsafe, not at ease, or even paranoid when they just want to have fun like normal people, having to watch themselves and their behaviour constantly as they are always in the spotlight.
(another perspective) in the polaroid pictures, the members seem happy, its like pictures you could take behind the scenes away from camera’s, something that you would post on your “close friends story” or private account for only your closest friends. this could also just symbolize hey, that they are still normal people behind the scenes, that they do things anyone else would do and not something elaborate and fancy just because of their high status.
contrast between the background and what the members are doing in a sense:
something i noticed was that the background, what the members are wearing, is ornate, fancy, rich. this contrasts to what the memebrs are doing/their appearance in the mv. for example, the most obvious example would be taehyung, who is looking “roughed up”. the house that they are in is how they appear to the outside world, while them as people, the ones inside, are the ones struggling behind closed doors, representing how emotionally beat up he/they are.
due to this, something else i noticed was that Instead of more “cinematic shots”, the camera movement and shots are created using a handheld camera, the movements make it look more “chaotic”, instead of nice, controlled steady camera shots, to further enhance the emotional feel of the song/mv.
other:
jungkook looking at himself, all soaked, in the mirror = hoseok looking at himself, in a bathroom with wet hair, in the mirror (parallel; i need u mv, hyyh)
yoongi trying to hop a fence = yoongi hopping the fence (parallel; fire mv)
the couch that yoongi had behind him reminded me of the boy with luv mv, when all the members had that one scene with the couch (parallel)
taehyung all bruised up = taehyung all bruised up (parallel; hyyh storyline)
bangtan and their thing with fucking bathrooms i cant AHAHAHAHAHAH
tae my man now that the pants are off lets move from the bathroom to the bed wink wink (im gonna kms kmskmsksksms why am i so cringe bro im crying HABABHABSJHSAN)
in summary, everything leads back to them just being normal guys, wanting to do normal things, and trying to navigate life while having a constant spotlight so brightly upon them
watched half the Merry Go Round mv in 240p bc Spotify is NOT a video streaming platform and is pretty bad at pretending it is 😭🙌
