#that’s her love language

Ok but one of the things I really really love about this scene is the trepidation the scoobies have. The way they’re so quiet and hesitant when they talk to Spike. Even Giles. It’s the way they don’t exactly lie to him, but they give him a very vague, very sugar coated version of the truth. And some of it I think is because they feel guilty, because they know that what they did was bad. But I think the other part is, they are genuinely afraid of his reaction. And I think that further reinforces Buffy’s “is that why you sent Spike away? To ambush me?“
Because they knew he wouldn’t agree. They knew he wouldn’t follow anybody but Buffy. They knew he’d push back and argue with them and would never have gone along with the way they turned on her. And that begs the question: if Spike had been there, would it have gone differently?
Because right after everybody turned on her Buffy said “I know I'm right about this. I just need a little…”
Belief? Help? Faith? In the end, that’s what Spike gives her. His belief and his help and it leads her to finding the thing that can help them beat the First. Because she was right and he knew it.
And also, circling back around to how nervous they are to tell him, it’s interesting because it’s such a contrast of how they treated him in past seasons. They pretty much never cared about his opinion and they always figured they could treat him however they wanted because he was a soulless vampire and, crucially, he was chipped and couldn’t do anything about it. But that’s not true anymore.
But anyway, ultimately I just think it’s really funny how, canonically, there must’ve been a moment after they kicked Buffy out where they all stopped and went “oh crap, Spike is gonna kill us”
Some fun stuff from the Touched script:
He thinks he’s so funny. As if Buffy joining the circus doesn’t mean he’s joining the circus too. He’s already doing his best impression of a clown. Maybe that’s what Giles’ “sideshow freak” dream meant in restless 🤣
All this time I thought Faith called him “bad boy” but no she called him “BAT BOY” sksks
Spike agreeing to play guessing games with Andrew.
They’re so sillygoofystupid
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO LOVE OK!!!
