what are your thoughts on 6x17-6x18?
I'm finally back with more reviews. I have a lot of thoughts but I'm still going to follow the rules and review every single episode so I don't miss out a detail.
Episode 17 is the one where Buffy is stuck in the asylum. This was such an interesting episode to watch. I'm not gonna lie but this concept kinda reminded me of the fun fan theory in the Harry Potter fandom where people talk about how the entire wizarding world is just a figment of Harry's imagination. Buffy being stuck in between both the realities was interesting to watch. I squealed when I saw Joyce again, I was so happy despite the circumstances. I gotta give it to these nerds, they are really clever. I don't think any villains before the trio had Buffy figured out this much. They knew what her weakness was and they hit her. It absolutely broke me when she poured the antidote that Willow made her in the trash. And trying to kill everyone? Oh that was super fucked up. But I also loved that Joyce's words, though it worked against what she actually intended, helped Buffy gain some sense of her actions and gave her the will to live. This episode will be a favourite of mine just because of the intense emotions that we explore here.
Episode 18 is the one where Anya tries hard to curse Xander. I like the concept of how Anya can't use her powers to satisfy herself. And though I enjoyed how she struggled to get the scoobies to use the word W-I-S-H, it also made me incredibly sad that Anya was struggling this much to cope. I hate that even though Xander loves her, he still has this fear of marriage that he wasn't able to get over. I sympathise with them both. They are both hurting, just in different ways. On another news, Spike was shot down by Buffy for the Nth time. But this time she acknowledged that his love was real, for him. Still doesn't change anything but this triggers a sequence of events that I never would've guessed. A very sad, drunk and depressed Anya and Spike decide that they should have sex, which is caught on the camera that the trio pervs planted in the magic box. Saying Xander was furious would be an understatement. It ends with Buffy's affair being aired out which only upset Xander more. I know people always say that he needs to mind his own business and everything, which is true, but I can see why he made this a big deal. Xander taunted Spike more than once about how he can never get with Buffy all the while Spike and Buffy had some sort of relationship. I can see why it would hurt him and why he would be embarrassed. But that's all I'm gonna say.
Well, hey! yk what cheered me up? WILLOW AND TARA KISSED!!!!!!!! They got back together (look at me talk about it as if I don't know what Joss Whedon pulled in the next episode😬😬)
what are your thoughts on 5x15-5x17?
Episode reviews
Episode 15 was the one with the robot girlfriend. Throughout the episode I felt like I was watching movie Companion. It's an amazing movie, totally recommend it. Anyways, this one was a good episode. Nothing too complex just fun suff. Really not much to comment on. I did enjoy hearing the characters perceptions of love and loneliness tho. The ending wrecked me and I'll talk about it in a moment.
Episode 16. Joyce Summers dies. Oh this one hurt so much, i can't even begin to explain. Oh this episode was a masterpiece. I have to talk about the sound design. The emptiness was seeping through the screen. No backing track nothing. Just the sadness emanating off the characters, especially buffy and willow. Grief, perfectly written. I don't think they could've done a better job than this. It's a freaking masterpiece. I- I don't know what to say. I'm still heartbroken and it still feels raw. Maybe one day I'll be able to write a proper analysis of this episode but right now all I can see is pain.
Okay here's what's gonna happen. I'm gonna keep watching the show and hopefully that will help me process her death and then I'll write an extensive review on every single episode I've watched today. I won't be making one long post. Maybe several posts would be easier to read.
Joyce is gone... She is gone...What do you mean...what?
hey thanks for answering! very fun to read, always happy to send more questions and answer any when i can (currently very fatigued and brain fog right now though so slow typing and brain power kinda hard, but i still very much want to ask and answer questions)
1) it's called the Watcher's Council
2) Faith's age is a little unclear but i think maybe she's meant to be 17 so she wouldn't have known about it cause they do it on the 18th birthday
3) yeah her absence is a little annoying that they don’t quite address at times certain episodes in s3 she wont be in and they don’t always explain in much detail (i'm not sure if it's this episode or a later one but i remember i think Buffy saying that Faith is on "one of her walkabouts" or something to try to explain her absence in one of the s3 episode, it may have been 3.12)
hopefully i remembered to answer everything you brought up, if not lmk.
and lastly a few more questions if you want to talk even more about Buffy:
how do you think it could have gone differently if Faith was around in that episode and found out what was happening with Buffy? (in a way that wouldn't make the episode too boring to easily have another slayer around at full strength)
and what did you think about Joyce's involvement? getting kidnapped, needing to be rescued by Buffy (not at full strength), Giles (not a slayer, only human) deciding to help, and Joyce being in the know about Buffy's slayer life this season? (which was quite funny and interesting Joyce in the previous episode, Gingerbread, tagging along for her patrol, bringing snacks (i think?) and wanting to be more involved and like encouraging her while Buffy fights that vampire)
Oooohhh I love doing thissss!!! Okay so, yea I think you answered my questions and that does help me out a lot. Thankss<3
I think if faith was involved in that episode, then it would've went a lot differently. Faith is someone who doesn't trust others very much. She has a friendship with people but not enough to be vulnerable around them. So I think, without that emotions attached, she could've atleast figured out that something was wrong with Giles. But then again, she never really understood Giles enough to have a leisurely convo with him so, maybe she wouldn't bother to bring it up if even if she figured Giles was acting weird. It could go both ways but I think, after knowing the truth, Buffy atleast would've had a strong slayer to help her out. I don't understand why they didn't add faith in that episode because it still could've been a great thing.
I love that Joyce is more involved in slayer world now. I was eagerly waiting for her to be in on the lore and now it's amazing. Her having a drink and a chat with spike was adorable. Her being jealous of Giles' closeness with buffy was also valid. But I mostly love that she constantly tries to understand Buffy's world. She puts in the effort to make things right and that warms my heart. I also kinda wish that she and Giles would fall into a relationship. I thought of that even before the candy episode but I think that episode kinda ruined their chances atleast for now. But I'm still hoping🕯️
I really like having these convos so keep them coming<3
