"A face like that? Man worked hard to prove he's more than just looks." Mumford watches Luca yell instructions at the group, saving the most vitriol for his son Dominique. "Bet you a fifty he's within the top three of his cohort."

"I don't take bets I know I'll lose," Buck says. He nods at the guys running past him. "You reserving him for 50-squad?"

"Why?"

"Because I want Luca. That one's mine."

Mumford holds out a hand. "Deal."

For me because I've always wanted to write a little something for Buck.

When Buck’s depressed he always goes to the beach, it’s the only place that settles his unruly mind, especially since he gave up the drinking six months ago. That’s where you find him, when you realise he’s not at home. He’s sitting on the sand, his elbows resting on his knees as he stares out across the restless waves. His work boots rest alongside of him, his jeans rolled halfway up his calves. Paddling in the sea, it helps sooth him sometimes.

You place a kiss upon his dark unruly curls before you drop down alongside of him, your shoulder brushing lightly against his.

“My heads a little messy today.” He tells you, toying with the wedding ring on his finger.

You’ve been married a couple of years by this point and he still wonders some days if he made a mistake. He can be a burden, he knows that. He’s waiting for the day you realise you’re too good for him, the one where he comes home to find a wedding ring and divorce papers on the kitchen table.

Your arm threads through his, your fingers interlacing and for a moment all of the noise in his head it just stops, the same way it always does when he’s with you. Your head comes to rest upon his shoulder and he sighs as his lips brush over your hairline.

“When are you going to realise that you’re too good for me?” He whispers and you squeeze his hand lightly.

“About the same time you realise you’re too good for me.” You bat back and he laughs then because you both know that’s never going to happen.

You tilt your head up to meet his eyes and despite the way he feels right now, the edges of his mouth tip up into a smile because you just have this way of making the world a little brighter, even when you don’t mean to.

“I do love you,”  He whispers as his lips brush over yours. “Truly I do.”
