Ok I'm not as deep into the regency fandom but I am curious about who the other coin in your Matthew macfadyen meme is now??

(Referring to this post which I tagged with #if i had a penny for every time that a mediocre man who had starred in a jane austen adaptation opposite the most stunning woman#turned out to be fine with selling their soul to a bully then i would have two pennies which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice)

The other mediocre man who sold his soul that I was referring to is Johnny Flynn, who played Mr Knightley in Emma (2020) and is playing Lucius Malfoy in the TV series that is lining the pockets of that mould-huffing bully.

The numerous disadvantages of his face are only compounded by the fact that we're meant to believe a woman as beautiful as Anya Taylor-Joy (who played Emma) would look twice at him.

Though there are (as there are with all of Austen's heroes) scant details of Mr Knightley's physical appearance in the novel, it's certainly a choice that they chose a short, scruffy, shaggy-haired man with such an unfortunate face to play him, especially since Emma tells us in Chapter 4 that 'you might not see one in a hundred with gentleman written as in Mr Knightley' ........

Yeah I watched the fall! The colour and choreography left a huge impression. I remember I had to illegally stream it. I probably only know it exists because of tumblr, which I think is the case with me and pushing daisies as well. I will make sure to rewatch it soon!

oh babe you and me both!!!!! i would KILL for that job, i spend my entire life picking out songs that i think should play over particular scenes. half my fic ideas are inspired by lyrics or vibes of different songs. i have a playlist on spotify called 'that romcom life' that follows the trajectory of a typical romcom but through music. i honestly don't even know what that job is called (editor??? music editor???) but oh what a job it would be! controlling the aux cord at the ultimate level 😍😍😍

Okay, okay, so, I have mentioned it once or twice probably, but I'm currently writing a sequel for a fic I wrote and posted in October called high on you

In this verse, Buck has been Sophia's long-time best friend and Eddie is his older brother who has just returned from college with a bit of glow-up while Buck has recently discovered his bisexuality, which results in a crush and eventually... well, you can probably guess.

Now, this isn't about the sequel, which is set during that summer and mostly about them sneaking around and, uhm, having fun, but about the third part I have already planned and am craving to write (I won't until I finish part two, but I want to so badly).

The third part is much more like canon - Eddie joins the army and ships off to Afghanistan, Buck goes to college and then gets kicked out. They break up because Buck can't take the long distance and other surrounding circumstances anymore, and starts his travels like in canon while Eddie... well.

Of course, the story doesn't end there, and Eddie ends up in LA with Christopher years and years later without knowing Buck will be there, and there is still a lot to tell from there 👀

Anyway, I have to actively keep myself from starting it already because I have like five other active WIPs as well but it takes up a lot of space in my brain at all times 😌

I really like your take on casting adult actors for teenage characters, as yes! Costuming and makeup and hair departments can do a lot! But I also think your example of Derry girls is very telling? Definitely the crew did a great job of making these women look like girls. But i think a big part of that is that it’s set in the 80s/90s. Firstly because at that time there was much less pressure for girls to dress sexily, and also bc the distance of time can maybe make it easier to code characters a certain way (eg young). Of course it absolutely doesn’t help that teens are surrounded by adult celebrities or even young celebrities pressured to dress and act like older people. There’s no good way out here other than radically changing our view on fashion everywhere I’m afraid :(

Thank you! Yeah, it's definitely a complex issue. I agree that there are specific elements of today's culture that we can point to and say, this is contributing to that damage and adding to the pressure teenage girls feel to always look "hot" (tiktok and instagram making looking photo-shoot-ready a constant demand, contoring pressuring girls to look older specifically etc). But I would hesitate to say that there was less pressure on young women to be sexy in the past. I don't think there has ever been a time where young women didnt face overwhelming pressure to look sexually appealing to adult men! Reflecting on the microminis and low-rise jeans, I think that the difference is that we no longer consider that sort of style to be sexy, not that that wasn't the motivation at the time. But I do agree that there is a constant visibility teenagers have today (again social media's influence) that makes it harder to escape or take a break from these expectations.

I guess my point was that we could be remedying a lot of this issue of presenting teenagers with adult bodies by focusing on changes that can be made to styling and costuming. Not all of the problem! But some. Which to me is a good place to focus because of the very real risks posed by exposing teenagers to the industry or by making teenagers work full time.
