Alex Manes Week
day 1 | prompt home can be a person | theme family + pets
No Place Like Home (100 words)
Alex decided on a whim - okay it wasn't really a whim - to go to the animal rescue shelter where Forrest had found Buffy. He was just going to look, get a feel for the different dogs there, see what sort of stuff he'd need to outfit his home, that's it.
Three hours later, with a spirited beagle pit bull mix tugging on the leash, he finally arrived home. He decided to name her Dawn, so she truly could be like Buffy's little sister. It was like she was always meant to be there, seamlessly fitting into his life.
I have to rant about Buffy because I saw some old gifs and I have feelings... what tf happened to her?
It all started in 1x07 with Mimi seeing a beagle in Alex’ life. Planting the idea that sometime in the future Alex might get a dog. Something positive for the guy who had a lot of shit happening in his life. Then it continued in 1x12 when Alex said “Can it feed my beagle?” to Flint, implying that Alex did in fact get a dog.
She became a significant addition in fics and headcanons. Ppl got excited because there was something good in the cards for Alex. And this was important for a lot of people after Alex ended s1 alone and the love of his life was starting something new. The fandom knew that s2 would be hard for Alex but there was a little beagle shaped hope on the horizon.
While filming s2 CAM posted this:
On October 23rd 2019, nearly 5 month before s2 started airing. She used the hashtag “give the people what they want”, revealed her amazing name and showed her in a pic with Alex, therefore tying Buffy to him. She knew about the fandom’s desires. This only fueled the Buffy headcanons. With a hiatus as long as this one the fandom had a lot of time to built up expectations.
The season started as did the long wait for Buffy to arrive. The first few eps were hard on Alex and I looked even more forward to finally meeting Buffy and then we met her and she isn’t even a Manes. She is Forrest’s dog. And while this is not what I expected, it could’ve been fine but we see her for like 1 minute. That’s it! Numerous fics and headcanons prompted by the narrative and fueled by the show runner for 1 minute of actual screen time and she doesn’t even have ties to Alex. What even...
I’m biased but I think it’s not wrong to say that Alex had a pretty shit season. He ended the eps alone and sad. I didn’t need to see Buffy every time that Alex was around but it would’ve been nice to know that when Alex got home at the end of a bad day, she would be there waiting. A little barking light in all the darkness. Instead it feels like Alex is here to suffer.
This has gotten long for “just” a misleading dog but it can totally be connected to the show as a whole because it’s not the only occasion and Alex is not the only character where they were building up anticipation this season and never delivered on it. I feel like the fandom is less active and maybe this is a reason for it. I see fewer posts with in depth speculations about how events will turn out. A lot of ppl rather wait while only commenting and lowering their expectations to not get (too) excited. And this is only season 2. I really hope it gets better in s3 because I love these characters.
Buffy is like “I’m taking over bff duties, effective immediately”.
