If the reboot goes ahead, and SMG plays an older, wiser Buffy who shows up a few times to give advice and encouragement to the new Buffy (named after her, of course), I hope they keep her romantic life as vague as possible. The original Buffy didn't want to know too much (if anything) about Giles' dating history, or her own mother's, and why should the new one?

I hope the most we get about the last twenty years of our Buffy's life are some scattered hints that she's in a long-term relationship with somebody who used to be a vampire -- "a vampire with a soul?" the show's new Buffy can scoff -- but who became human again "decades ago" after fulfilling the terms of an ancient prophecy. I hope they have the original Buffy let slip that she met her partner when she was a high school student, but it took her a while to realize that they were the one. That they used to be evil but have since reformed and help her fight against evil and save the world. That they're the most important person in her life after her sister and her nieces. I hope the Bangel and Spuffy fans spend hours refighting old wars about which character Buffy is "meant to be with", both convinced that the show is building up a cameo by their preferred (now older and in-universe human) leading man.

I hope that, in the last episode of the first season of the new show, our Buffy's phone rings during a key bit of exposition -- in the library, ideally, because it won't be Buffy without one of those -- and she apologizes, saying that she has to take it because "that's my wife". I hope as she walks out of shot, phone in hand, we see her smile and we hear her say "hey, Harmony". And I hope the show never, ever expands on any of that again.

I'm sorry but the only buffy reboot I want is the anthology, where every episode we meet a new slayer, and all of those women are of various ages, not just schoolgirls and twenty-somethings and are from different countries. they fight silly and unique monsters of the week on top of casual vamps and in a middle of episode they need a key piece of information, so they like "What Would Buffy Do" and then they just call her and she's always in some epic geenscreen backdrop location, fighting fuckass practical effect puppet and having a time of her life, while casually solving the current issue herself or outsource it to any other of our beloved character. I refuse to believe in a world where Buffy in her 40s isn't having fun, fully accepted herself, flirty and thriving.

unbelievably relieved hulu no longer has the chance to ruin Buffy with a reboot the way they did with veronica mars

the concept of the world of buffy being written and directed by all women and without the influence of joss whedon is sooooo appealing but the fact that they cast another white blonde girl to be the main slayer, sarah michelle gellar’s continuously terrible takes on the show because she still hasn’t been able to separate her own experiences filming with that of what was happening narratively (she is still bringing up season 6 in a “well we all know THAT was no one’s favorite! it’s just so dark!” failing to grasp it’s one of the most profound depictions of depression we have in media that has helped so many of us during our darkest times), didn’t even have any of the women writers back like Jane or Rebecca to even attempt some form of continuity in the writers room with the people who showed an understanding of the characters that went far beyond most actors and fans, and still to this day thinks stalker, pedophile, rapist, emotionally manipulative and abusive (all with a soul) angel is buffy’s soulmate…. I didn’t trust her in the slightest to make sure this was handled correctly ESPECIALLY because she claimed “and just like that” was A GOOD example of a reboot handled correctly like bitch you are the ONLY person who thinks that actually because other than killing off big and finally freeing carrie it ruined the show for the rest of us

not to mention sound/lighting and costume department’s budget have all been absolutely gutted in the last 10-15 years and all three of those elements are critical to any production but for buffy ESPECIALLY and the likelihood the writing would be of the same caliber is practically nonexistent because young audiences these days need EVERYTHING spelled out for them and soooo much of the good buffy writing was in the showing not telling, there are still soo many arguments today within the fandom because certain groups are incapable of understanding what is being shown to them and what the implications are narratively and it’s only gotten so much worse

the concept in theory is so fun but in practice I was absolutely terrified and so am extremely happy with this latest news because it’s time for NEW stories with new faces and leaving the past in the past instead of trying to drag it forward with us when 9 times out of 10 we hate it when a reboot actually happens

I am not ashamed to say I cried when the news broke. I do not know where I would be without Buffy Summers, and I feel so much sadness that another generation won't get their Slayer. Now that we are in the age of understanding PR campaigns I think we all know better than to believe what they're saying. It's worth having a conversation about the wording that the executives used when they responded to the backlash. This is the work of PR, not a failing on the creative team.

Sarah Michelle Gellar turned down several reboot opportunities because she felt they weren't good enough. She signed on to this project because she thought it was honest to the original, while still allowing a new generation to find their own Slayer. She's been training for months for this project. She hand picked the new Slayer. She cares about the legacy of this show as much as we all do.

Chloé Zhao has won Oscars, and is well known for her visionary filmmaking. Her movie Hamnet just got nominated several times this Oscars season. Everyone who has worked with her applauds her artistic vision and relentless passion. She is no pushover.

The writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman just came off of a very successful run with Pokerface on Peacock which may not have won many awards, but did at the Screen Actors Guild. They've worked for extremely successful shows like Fringe, and Agents of Shield.

This was a project written, directed, and envisioned by a collaboration of women that was for the intended viewing of other women. Which was squashed by a man who openly admitted he never liked the original and "didn't get it". This coming from a company that has been reproducing animated classics in to live action with aggressively large CGI budgets and get slammed every time. Yet they continue to make them.

When they say "it wasn't very good". What they're saying is damage control. The announcement wasn't left to them, who knows what it would have said if it was. They don't want to go toe to toe with Sarah Michelle Gellar who is one of the most beloved fan favorite actresses, or Chloé Zhao who is one of the biggest directors in Hollywood right now. They are attacking the writers who are the lowest hanging fruit. This is the same old song and dance.

It should be noted that whenever a female lead series comes out that people don't like, their excuse is usually "the writing". We see it in Star Wars, in Marvel, and pretty much every major fandom. Always attack the writers to find an excuse to not like something. Disney has taken notes from toxic fan culture and turned it back on all of us.

Pilots are re-written and re-shot all the time. It would make sense for the pilot to not center Buffy as the series is called "New Sunnydale". Sarah already said we would be following the new Slayer as well as catching up with Buffy where she is now. Disney wanted a rehashed version of the original, which couldn't work now that so much has come out about it's original creator. This was meant to be a new Buffy for a new generation and Disney didn't want to take that gamble. And now Disney owns the rights so the show cannot be shopped to another network.

Don't believe their PR when they say it wasn't strong enough.

Genuinely tired of people that are happy that the Buffy reboot was cancelled because it was going to be “disappointing” and bad. I still would’ve liked to see the effort. I still would’ve liked to see Buffy return to the screen in a project that Sarah really believed in. Btw way to discount her DECADES of experience in the film industry of what works and doesn’t work. Were there parts I heard about that wasn’t enthusiastic about? Yes. Did I hope it got cancelled bc of them? Of course fucking not how mean spirited.

Also you didn’t have to watch it and it wouldn’t have “ruined” the original show. Let people enjoy things.
