Second design I made for my linoprinting class! Really happy how this one turned out. I had no idea what I was doing carving out the sky, just a vague idea of what I wanted it to look like, and it came out cooler than I imagined
Glad you had a good time together, and that the movie was indeed good! All the fandom analysis on my dash had already made me curious, but I haven't seen it yet. Maybe I should convince the boyfriend to watch it together this weekend, if you two think we would like it as well.
Voordat we beginnen: Er is geen juist antwoord. Het maakt me niet uit met welke bron je aan komt lopen, niemand kan dit soort definitieve uitspraken maken over taal. Dingen zoals woordenboeken en lesboeken dicteren niet hoe de taal werkt, maar omschrijven bestaande patronen en termen in de steeds veranderende spreek- en schrijftaal. Daarom gebruiken veel woorden tegenwoordig zowel "het" als "de" in woordenboeken en keurt menig taalboek "groter als" niet fout; Taalfouten zijn geen fouten meer als iedereen het op dezelfde manier fout doet. Ik ga hieronder dan ook bronnen aanstippen die geen enkele autoriteit of expertise hebben, en dat is juist het exacte punt. Als je het hier niet mee eens bent en wil zoeken naar een officieel antwoord, doe dat vooral, maar deze post is niet voor jou vrees ik.
Het grootste verschil waar ook de grootste split tussen zit (momenteel 60/40) is de kwestie of ij twee losse letters is, i+j (dus een digraaf) of 1 karakter (dus een ligatuur* of een letter).
*(Let op! Met ligatuur bedoel ik hier een aan elkaar geschreven karakter wat anders in gebruik is dan diens losse onderdelen, zoals æ en œ. (Of zelfs &, maar dat is een ander verhaal.) Ik bedoel niet een ligatuur zoals de f en i in finale die soms aan elkaar geschreven worden, maar met 100% zekerheid wel losse letters zijn.)
Dus laten we kijken. ij en IJ zijn unicode karakters. Duidelijk 1 karakter dus. Deze karakters zitten op je mobiele toetsenbord vaak achter de i of y verstopt (zie onderstaande afbeelding), maar op een fysiek toetsenbord zijn ze nergens te vinden. Op Windows zitten ze in de alt-codes verstopt, maar op Mac kun je voor zover ik weet niet een ij typen met je fysieke toetsenbord.
Dus het ascii karakter ij bestaat, maar gebruikt men het ook? Lang verhaal kort: Nee. De overheid gebruikt het niet, Malmberg (waarmee ik (nog👀?) geen officiele associatie heb) gebruikt het niet, zelfs het Instituut der Nederlandse Taal, bekend van het Groene Boekje, gebruikt het niet. Je kunt dit zien door op de websites met je muis over de tekst te hoveren. De ij kun je los van elkaar selecteren, de ij niet.

Goed, dus in de wereld van computers is ij meestal twee losse karakters. Maar de taal wordt ook geschreven, dus wat zien we daar?
Laten we kijken naar het alfabet. Als ij in het alfabet zit is het een letter, toch? Helaas is hier, voorspelbaar genoeg, geen unanieme duidelijkheid over:
Wikipedia benoemt 3 verschillende alfabetten. Eentje met XYZ, eentje met XIJZ, en eentje met XIJYZ. Je hoeft ook niet ver te zoeken naar prenten van alfabetten voor kinderen die het hierover niet eens zijn. Alledrie kun je vinden binnen de eerste 10 resultaten op een Google Image search voor "Nederlandse Alfabet":
En dan hebben we het nog niet eens echt gehad over hoofdletter (of hoofdletters?) IJ. Want het is niet Ijsland en Ijssel, maar IJsland en IJssel. Allebei de letters worden hoofdletters, dus òf dit is een hele rare specifieke uitzondering in het Nederlands hoofdletter gebruik, òf ij is 1 letter/ligatuur.
Het verschil tussen ligatuur en letter is subjectiever. Een ligatuur is aan elkaar geschreven (æ≠ae) maar dat is ij niet altijd. Plus, schrijf je in de praktijk de ij in Nederlandse woorden echt anders dan bijvoorbeeld de i+j in het Engelse hijack? Aan de andere kant, het zijn duidelijk wel een i en een j die samengevoegd zijn. Dus is het dan een letter? W is van oudsher ook twee losse letters v (of u?) die aan elkaar zijn gaan plakken, dus een letter die sterk op twee letters naast elkaar lijkt is zo gek nog niet. En sowieso is het nog wel geloofwaardig dat een ligatuur uit het alfabet en toetsenbord ontbreekt, maar een letter? Dat zou vreemder zijn, als je het mij vraagt.
Er is geen eenduidig antwoord. In kruiswoordpuzzels en Lingo gaat ij in een hokje, maar in de meeste scrabble-uitgaves niet, en sommige mensen staan daarbij zelfs toe om de y als ij te gebruiken. In de meeste woordenboeken staat het woord "ijspegel" bij de i, maar een woordenteller zegt dat er 8 letters in zitten als je het uit die woordenboeken rechtstreeks kopiëert, en toch schrijf je die woorden echt met een hoofdletter IJ. Als korte ei een difraaf is zou het gek zijn als lange ij dat niet is. Als Griekse y een letter is zou het gek zijn als lange ij dat niet is. In sommige handschriften ziet ij er hetzelfde uit als y (of ÿ). De Wikipedia-pagina voor ij noemt het in een zin een digraaf, een ligatuur en "soms beschouwd als een letter, maar er is altijd een scenario denkbaar waarin ij toch echt verschilt van alledrie die categoriën.
Is het niet absurd dat de vraag "hoeveel letters heeft het naam Gijs" geen eenduidig antwoord heeft? Andere talen hebben dit eerder al gewoon opgelost. In het Spaans is ñ een andere letter dan n, maar á is een a met een accent aigu. Is dat per sé logisch? Nee, maar het is wel duidelijk.
More friendship-yarns! (Aka yarns spun from fiber mixes my friends designed for me)
In the first picture a skein of 'Antique Christmas', 90 meters of fingering weight yarn containing corriedale, merino, stellina and nylon glitters. The small skein next to it is 'Tangerines', 75 meters of lace weight (there is less of this blend because I used part of it to teach a little girl how to spin who was mesmerized by me spinning at a bbq we were both at), merino and nylon glitters.
In the second picture is 'Chocolate and strawberries', 180 meters of very fuzzy woolen spun yarn. Grist-wise it is definitely lace weight, but due to how airy it is and the halo it is quite close to a light fingering WPI. It contains World of Wool's Dusty Raven Berry, dark and light brown undyed mystery wools and indie dyed mohair. This was my first time spinning this woolen, I tend to default to a more worsted draft even with a woolen fiber prep, and it is definitely something I need more practice with, but the result is lovely.
I have spun my thinnest plied thread yet, 117 meters in 3,3 grams, aka a grist of 3500 meters per 100 grams, which is low-key insane. I love it so much. 100% silk, spun from indie dyed hankies (hand dyed but not by me). I used my new 12,8 gram Turkish spindle from Studio Spintol.
I am gonna use it to knit more pieces for my series of waves. For the first five, see this post:

This is a piece I have never shared online before. I made it after the 2020 bushfires - thinking about how much was lost, and the charred stumps I saw when I later walked in the forests.
The two paper pieces are small paper prototypes. My thinking steps on the way to the larger piece.
But seeing them together like this, they feel more to me like they are pilgrims on a journey.
Oh, that is a very impactful piece, both the original intention and the reframed feelings/meaning now together with the prototypes. I love how you photographed them with the long shadows, those really strengthen the feeling of movement, moving forward so to say, after the tragedy of the bushfires. The little pilgrims, children perhaps, are less damaged, the bigger child has some soot on it, but is still largely unburnt, that gives hope for a better future where we take better care of our world.
A really lovely piece, thank you for sharing it! It makes me feel all kinds of things.
One question, if you don't mind, the black fabric, does it actually get darker towards the top? Or is that a trick of the light/photograph? Either way, very cool, I am just being curious 😇

I am really on a spinning-roll lately! Not quite because of tour the fleece, I was already spinning quite intently for a few weeks before TdF started, but it is always fun to see what everyone else is up to.
This is about 80 meters and 100 grams of very bulky yarn. Black alpaca, orang sari silk, black merino with glitters and the remnants of a very colourful merino batt. I really love it. I usually don't spin much bulky yarns, I don't use it much either, but it is good to keep those skills in my tool belt, so I practice occasionally. Spinning a bulky skein is also a good way to use up some fiber quickly and make room for new fibers 😇
The yarn is not very even, due to my relative inexperience with spinning bulky yarn and a difficult fiber blend, but it is very usable. I love how it came out, the colours pop beautifully, the silk and the glitters give a lovely shine and it is an airy and relatively light yarn, not too dense or stiff.
SIX, that's right, SIX small quilts i made in May this year. they're varying sizes, but all around 10" across (except the last one, the granny square; that's about 14"). these are all made using fabric i naturally dyed in my kitchen using things like osage, madder, cutch, wattle, black walnut, knotweed, goldenrod... some modified with iron or soda ash. playing with color and making sure scraps don't go to waste!
Parts 1-5 in a series of small knitted artworks depicting waves, ripples, and other textures of moving water surfaces. Waves 1 and 3 are made with handspun silk and wool, wave 5 with only handspun silk. Waves 2 and 4 are made with unspun silk. They are small pieces, the black cardstock backings are 10x15 cm (4x6 inch), to give a sense of scale.
