Returned to two things I didn’t think I would today:

Watching more of Interview with the Vampire and actually sitting down to read the ‘Dazai’s Entrance Exam’ Light novel.

Years ago, I had watched a lot of the first season of IWTV but didn’t continue due to fatigue from watching it in one go. As for the LN, I was at a B&N with someone and didn’t feel like buying anything, so I sat down and read as much of the LN as I could before we had to go, lol.

As a result of these two choices to return to past endeavors consuming content, I am tired and filled to the brim with too many thoughts to parse out. IWTV is an insane emotional rollercoaster. Yet, it’s also so beautiful with its acting, wording, and scenes. Very painful. And good. I actually started those years ago by watching the OG movie for IWTV, so that’s been a cool peek into everything.

As far as the LN… I have written a whole rant on that about my feelings and I was highlighting throughout. What I will say is that I love getting into the worldbuilding of how the agency works within the government structure, as well as Kunikida’s perspective at this time of his life. It felt much more like a test of Kunikida, rather than Dazai. I enjoyed their antics, especially at the American embassy lol. And I was surprised by Kunikida and Fukuzawa’s interactions. My impression of Fukuzawa was quite different even as a manga reader.

Now, to get to other things… What even was the last chapter? The anime while much different and changing up the exam to the point of it being ridiculous, at least seemed to give a moment of Kunikida’s reaction to Rokuzou’s death. The whole time the flow of conversation seemed to continue to trail on the same path about Sasaki and ideals my brain was rebelling going, “you literally blame yourself and your ideals for informing Rokuzou’s father of the Azure king stuff.” That kid you don’t feel you deserve to be a father to, that fourteen year old who came along out of curiosity, rather than the suspicion he was met with, was a fourteen year old who likely would have helped out in a case related to his father’s death even without the threat of evidence about himself turned in. Kunikida still uses it over him despite knowing he and the agency would never have given in the evidence showing Rokuzou hacked agency servers. Kunikida probably ends up blaming himself all over again later considering he and the agency set Rokuzou on the path of figuring out these emails and info.

He speaks pretty coldly and stiltedly towards Rokuzou, but the intent is clear that he does care about him and is just too rigid in thinking his way is “the most ideal” or “righteous” to really give Rokuzou the understanding he needs. And Kunikida does learn better in this book from what happens. I wish we got to see more about Kunikida and Rokuzou’s relationship. Dazai states he could have been a good agency member in the future (or something along those lines) in the book and AHHH.

Part of the strength of Dazai and Kunikida’s partnership is that Dazai knows how to manipulate people well. He easily understands them and what makes them tick at a slight glance, especially with Kunikida. Kunikida doesn’t even realize not everyone is like him at the point of the joke he says he thinks he’s “just like anyone else.” It’s definitely a struggle for Kunikida to find his priorities, settle the guilt, and find himself with the role he’s in, but he does grow enormously from this point to where we are in the manga from what I have seen. This also reflects on how his approach to interacting with children changes too.

I do really like how Dazai and Sasaki are paralleled in Kunikida’s eyes in the line about how they both basically place the weapon in another person’s bloody hands to use to avoid it staining their own. Dazai from what we can see from Kunikida’s limited perspective of him, clearly knew a lot of this was going to happen and orchestrated things to an extent with his predictions of it and actions. Is this the best outcome in Dazai’s eyes and priorities? That’s what’s most likely to be true. Is it the most moral or correct one? Not particularly and this isn’t to say it’s definitive he knew Rokuzou may accidentally appear first instead.
