These are burial mounds. The who lie here passed away hundreds of years ago, during the late iron age. They are are long forgotten and their graves have almost become part of the natural landscape. Ancestor veneration is important in Tengerism. People remember their ancestors to nine generations back. They maintain the shrines of their ancestors and bring them offerings. After many generations the ancestors is forgotten. Their spirit travels away and comes to reside in nature, becoming a nature spirit. The burial mounds eloquently symbolize this process, slowly being forgotten and becoming part of nature in a gentle process.

John Beddoe, The Races of Britain: A Contribution to the Anthropology of Western Europe (1885). These pictures are a selection of Bell Beaker folk Bronze Age artefacts at the Kelingrove museum in Glasgow. 1. A bronze age skull of a Beaker folk male whose cause of death seems pretty obvious. 2. Bronze weapons including an axe so tiny it can't possibly have been used for anything but some kind of ceremony. 3. Gold jewellery. 4. Cup and ring marks carved in stone. 5. Funerary urns. 6. A tiny urn for a child? 7. I am pointing at one of four stone slabs that formed the cist for a high status male burial. The zig zag engraving resembles other early Indo-European art seen on pottery. 8. An actual bell beaker for drinking rituals. 9. Hob Hurst’s House, Harland Edge. A square burial mound dating from the Bronze Age. West Kennet Long Barrow

West Kennet Long Barrow is the most impressive long barrow I’ve ever visited. The barrow was constructed in around 3650BC. At least 46 individuals were interred here (both cremations and inhumations), they were interred with grave goods including pottery and beads. I cannot recommend visiting this site enough, this is a truly inspiring monument set within the Avebury world heritage landscape. -RoxyB.

Opening hours: Any time during reasonable daylight hours

Side note: There is no path to this monument, you must hike up a hill to reach the long barrow. The hill gets very muddy and slippery, hiking boots or wellies are an absolute must!

The Bell family and their house, said to be built on a Native American burial mound, was haunted by this spirit, manifested in the form of black dogs, large birds, girls swinging from a tree branch, and the sound of chains being dragged across the bedroom floors of sleeping children.
