Burnt City, August 12

Since I’m in London, I had to go. I went in blind, except I knew there was an EJB possibility. Because it’s hot, and the building isn’t fully ACed, they only did two loops. This meant that I didn’t get a good feel for what was happening around the two stories I settled into.

Was it just my luck that the first performer I saw was EJB as Hades? Yes. Of course, I was delighted to see him. And how much better if Persephone was Lily Ockwell? I’m not quite sure how long a loop is, but I stayed with him until he picked someone for the 1:1. I contemplated just sticking around, but I really wanted to see what was choreographed to the piece of Faure I’d heard at the beginning, so I headed out to the main room.

This meant I saw a lot of Clytemnestra, though it took me a little while to figure out what was happening. How much better that she was Omagbitse Omagbemi?! I’ve never seen Omagbitse before, so this was a real treat.

I wish I could go again. I know I’ve seen just a fragment of the show. I have no understanding of the layout of the space and definitely didn’t see a lot of characters. Hopefully soon. 🤞🏼

Ciaccos, evening shadows falling. Zagreus and Eury share a drink, leaning in close. Beyond them the main square of Troy is dark and empty. The threat of invasion still hangs in the air. But this table, framed in the neon window, is a small island of light.

On the radio: "Your sweet love sees me through..

"

Zagreus and Eury are deep in conversation, eyes fixed on each other. They are telling each other their dreams. Dark and troubling dreams, to be spoken of in a half-whisper. This isn't a tentative first or second date. These are words spoken with a deep and familiar trust.

A pause, and the moment breaks. Zagreus flashes a grin at Eury, and she throws back her head and LAUGHS, and laughs.

Their laughter rings out as they dance through Troy in perfect synchrony, spinning themselves giddy. Hecuba passes, her lantern lit face troubled. Zagreus and Eury duck out her way, clutching each other and giggling. Eury jumps onto the window ledge of the White Cypress, Zagreus offers her a flower from Hesperides. For a moment, in each other's company, they've forgotten their cares, can be playful.

To be so comfortable with the object of your affection - isn't this what everyone wants? This is love, conveyed in laughter. Stumbling, and a little silly, and utterly, utterly at ease, even as the spectre of war grows ever darker overhead.

The laughter only softens as they reach Apollo's shrine. Their faces shadowed in the cool green light, our best friends and lovers fall together in an embrace, and finally a kiss.

The moment before the sirens sound...

In the city, moments of even the purest happiness can only be fleeting.
