morally grey ilya headcanon but unfortunately i think he’s one of those people that keeps his dog alive WAYYYYYY past the point where they would have died naturally simply because he can’t let go.
like anya lives to 20 simply because he spends all his money get her THE MOST expensive surgeries and medical support to keep her alive. he is HATED by their vet because every other month they’re bringing her back from the brink of death and solving some medical issue that is just never going to improve. like anya has a bum knee, blind and deaf, respiratory issues, littered with tumors, no teeth and has to be fed a liquid diet, has type 1 AND 2 diabetes, need 50 medications and round to clock care, but he’s doing EVERYTHING to keep her going.
shane knows it a problem but he knows how important anya is to him and is scared of what’s gonna happen to ilya when once she finally goes. i think him david and yuna have to have an intervention and be like “yes we all love her but she’s suffering” and ilya does NOT take it well and they have to butt out about it.
sometimes shane just looks into her cloudy eyes when ilya is not around and is like…anytime you wanna go…it’s okay…but the problem is anya will also NOT DIE. they have had several times that they think it’s the end and they bring in the vet to make sure she’s comfortable and all the sudden she’s perking up, and eating normally and has more energy than she’s had in the last 5 years.
i do think anya has a peaceful death. i think after there’s nothing else they can do they bring her to the cottage and she dies in ilya’s arms while looking at the sunset.
after the fact i do think ilya realizes yeah i think we should have let her go sooner. but he is thankful she got to have such a peaceful death even if it was way later than it should have been.
