John Kirby Sextet: Broadjump
This clip is one of the few instances we have of the John Kirby band on film. It comes from a film entitled Sepia Cinderella and one where the music and the actual filming were done separately. Regular drummer O’Neil Spencer has already left the band, and in his place here is the brilliant Big Sid Catlett. Charlie Holmes is the alto saxist, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Billy Kyle on piano and Charlie Shavers on trumpet. The tune is Broadjump which Shavers had recorded along with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco on the picture record label Vogue.
