Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers

“Music washes away the dust of every day life.” - Art Blakely

Art Blakely was a jazz drummer born in 1919 in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.  He played music from an early age, some reports say as early as 7th grade.  He had a tremendous amount of skill and was very well respected.

I have a collection of his music recorded by Rudy van Gelder, a huge music recording engineer in the era.  The sound is wonderful and the musicianship on display is spectacular.  The collection is titled, Moanin’ (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition).  I recommend it for anyone interested in jazz.

Art Blakely & the Jazz Messengers - Moanin’ 

This tune was written by pianist Bobby Timmons and first performed by Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, which Timmons was a pianist for for two periods (July 1958 to September 1959 and from February 1960 to June 1961). 

Pretty smart to make Moanin’ a signature tune in Kids on the Slope which forever linked Kaoru (a pianist) with Sentarō (a drummer) considering this piece is a tune led by a piano (played by Timmons) and driven by drums (played by Blakely).

Arthur "Art" Blakey (October 11, 1919 - October 16, 1990), also known as Abdullah Ibn Buhaina, was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Along with Kenny Clarke and Max Roach, he was one of the inventors of the modern bebop style of drumming. He is known as a powerful musician and a vital groover; his brand of bluesy, funky hard bop was and continues to be profoundly influential on mainstream jazz.
