Smaller than dust on this map Lies the greatest thing we have: The dirt in which our roots may grow And the right to call it home.

Ena wakes to find afternoon light filtering through the window, and Mizuki curling into her side, face pressing into her shoulder.
Her unpinned hand comes up to cradle the back of Mizuki's head before she fully wakes, cheek coming to press against forehead as she murmurs a sleep-slurred, "Mizuki?"
There's no reply, verbally. Just Mizuki pressing deeper against her, as if to burrow into her and away from the view of the outside world.
Ena manages to wake a bit more, tries to crane her neck to better see. Unfortunately, Mizuki refuses to lift her face... but Ena sees enough. How her hands grip the folds of Ena's sweater. How they're taken by an uncontrollable shake. How her eyes are pressed shut, trying to keep a lid on all that's roiling inside.
"Someone was an asshole, huh."
Mizuki lets out a single sound, a tiny intake of breath stretched between a single chuckle at Ena's bluntness and a sob.
Ena aches. With all the tenderness in her she shifts Mizuki closer, easing her gently over to come to rest against the crook of her shoulder, legs come about, pulling as much of Mizuki against her as she can while she brushes steady strokes up and down Mizuki's spine, reaching to share the sorrow, bleed it away, ground it and disperse it.
I've got you. I love you.
Another little broken laugh from Mizuki. "What I'd do to deserve you, huh?"
"Everything, and nothing," Ena replies automatically, before kissing the corner of Mizuki's eye, her cheek, her lip, firm but not harsh pressure applied, "Don't have to 'do' anything to deserve a shoulder to lean on. But you chose me, so of course I choose you."
"Gay." Mizuki takes a deep breath in, trying to clear the last of the snot away.
"I'd hope so," Ena wryly replies, and she adjusts to lace her fingers with Mizuki's, the pads of her fingers brushing over warm skin and gold. "Or I'd worry about the state of this. Would have to call An to help mediate, maybe."
That finally, finally, gets a small, pure laugh out of her wife. And Mizuki is finally able to rest, turning her head so she can watch Ena's face, relishing the simple joy of stealing a few extra quiet moments before they have to go tend to chores.
Another day is tallied, added to their journey together, and together they relish the product of their hearts intertwined.
