I’ve put away three of Guy Gavriel Kay’s novels in slightly over a week and am cracking open my fourth.

#i did the same with ursula le guin when i first started reading her #if i find an author i like with a decent backlog #i just keep on plowing through till i'm ready for a change #anyway i've read a brightness long ago #and the sarantine mosaic duology #i really enjoyed them #i love the way he shows ordinary people on the fringes of these grand historical turning points #and the way he changes povs and tenses in a way that quite frankly shouldn't work #but does #there's a great blend of intellectualism and action in the works i've read so far #i like to think about what i'm reading #but i also want a cracking good story #books #jenn reads #guy gavriel kay

honestly the fact that a show that regularly erases the character development of 4 of their main characters still works SO WELL is amazing and a testament to its quality

#the good place #good place #I've been thinking about this for a while #that the good place doesn't follow normal storytelling functions of characters learning and growing constantly #janet and michael do #but team cockroach is constantly sent back to square one #and idk that would usually diminish characters or make you not care about them or something #or want that character development back #but it WORKS #bc their character arcs are their quirky personalities and how they grow to relate to each other #and wanting to be better people #and resetting them provides new ways to explore all of that and you don't lose anything #i mean it's a comedy so that's part of it too you couldn't do this on a drama #but the good place is such a masterclass of storytelling that for all intents and purposes shouldn't work #BUT DOES
