Reasons for optimism for this season (if you're looking for that sort of thing)

basically! we had an amazing offense last year, and there's no reason to think we won't be as good or better on that side of the ball. we have the continuity of keeping all of our stars (joe! ja'marr! tee! mike apparently!) as well as our offensive coordinator dan pitcher who will be going into year 2 after a great start last year. these guys know and understand each other, the chemistry that was already amazing is only going to keep growing. someone put it as a PhD level offense at this point, with everything they'll be able to do now that they've mastered the basics with each other!

the one weakness on offense last year was the o-line, as always lol. even if you think we didn't do enough to improve there with our additions, you can still make an argument for addition by subtraction, getting rid of the two lowest rated guards in the entire league last year in cappa and volson lol. plus! new o-line coach with his emphasis on technique and his pedigree with some of the most respected o-line coaches in the league. he's already coached up rookies dylan fairchild and jalen rivers (a 3rd and 5th round pick!) into looking like something decent (more than decent in dylan's case!) which i think is a great argument for his ability to develop. and then with the addition of risner at depth at guard, who has great pass blocking abilities, and the extension for ted, i'm feeling a lot better with our interior depth. (swing tackle depth is not IDEAL, i'll be honest. we should have done more there. but also, i'm sure we are far from the only team in the league not happy with our tackle depth) (oh and another parenthetical here, even in the games last year where we had to use cody ford at tackle, joe was able to play well!)

so that's offense - we're all feeling good about that! now defense IS scary, i'm with you. but 1. defense is extremely variable, apparently it can be much quicker to change than offense and 2. we HAVE made some improvements that /should/ help. at least on paper! an almost entirely new coaching staff! with emphasis on guys who have a track record in developing younger guys. we made additions at nose tackle (a position we didn't even really HAVE last year - sorry mckinnley) defensive edge (shemar is looking promising to at least be disruptive if not productive, and may have some versatility to play inside) and added some linebackers that should help us (even if demetrius seems to be struggling at the moment, barrett is looking good and oren should add some veteran skill).

plus, again, some addition by subtraction. sam, as much as i love him, could barely move last year (and STILL lou trotted him out there like he was '21, '22 sam) same with vonn! (and germaine /could/ move but also couldn't tackle lol). these young guys we brought in are faster and more athletic. they have a lot of potential! we didn't add at secondary, which scares me a bit in regards to safety for sure (like we definitely should have added SOMEONE there. and instead all we did was make geno take a paycut?? 🙃 lol okay!) but i do feel good about our cornerback room. dj, dax, cam have all shown they can play at a high level!! we just have to find a way for them to be more consistent (or at least to make it so they aren't all playing badly at the same time lmao). and back to having a true nose tackle!! this should free up young guys on the interior like kris and mckinnley to be more effective in their true positions, instead of trying to be big body run stoppers like tj is already a natural at!

scheme-wise, i'll be honest, i still don't know X's and O's all that well. but it's clear that whatever lou was trying to do with the young talent the last few years was just not working. if al golden is able to simplify in the way joe talks about in the above tweet (clear-cut roles and calls!) then it could help the guys play faster and with more confidence! now i get obviously that what we saw in preseason was NOT encouraging lol. but apparently they were "only playing 10% of the playbook" so hopefully al has something cooked up in the other 90% that allows them to stop the fucking run. (i still don't really buy that excuse but, at least they know what they have to work on, and hopefully have worked on it in the last few weeks! and there is something to be said about having plays that cover up particular weaknesses on the team).

and then on special teams, oh my god if evan can just...be the evan he once was! paul has talked about how evan is trying to go back to his original "kicking strategy" and they brought in a new long snapper. punter/holder ryan is back in his second year with more experience, so hopefully we don't lose another ravens game based on a fucked up hold!!! (i still am not over that and never will be!!! we would have WON!!! oh the narratives that would have been....)

so yeah!!! i'm choosing to be optimistic on this day before the '25 season!! there are lots of reasons to think things will be better this year, so why not focus on those until proven otherwise!! i simply have to operate this way or i will die! so!!! excited to go into this season with y'all!

#toooooooo many words typed out trying to get out all my nerves that are HEAVILY kicking in for tomorrow #but yeah even though this offseason was PAINFUL and FRUSTRATING and INEFFICIENT to the max #we also!!! did a lot of stuff! that i'm feeling good about!#i'd give it....a b? b- maybe?#we did everything joe wanted #we added some good guys #we got rid of some terrible ones #we did NOT maximize cap at all. and do not fall!! for the national media narrative that paying the guys we paid was a mistake #we paid tee and ja'marr and trey (and mike!) and that is a GOOD thing #good teams keep their best players!!#and even doing all that we have PLENTY of cap space left over. and even more in the coming years #if we were smarter with their contracts we could have had even more this year!! but at least we now have a bunch next year because #we took on so much of it in this year (now you know. we just. have to USE IT)#and that's a large part of the reason i am not giving us an A!!! because we could have done more!!!#the brown family is relying on the propaganda that oh noooo we paid tee therefore we can't pay anyone else sorry!#when we HAVE the numbers and we KNOW we could have #and that we can next year. they just don't want to spend any more of their cash. so they make people think cap and cash are the same!!!#but that's a whole other rant #anyway. defense WILL be better #it may not be immediately. just because new scheme new coach. it may take awhile to gel #so don't panic immediately!!! be patient!!#(even though GOD we need to start fast)#we SHOULD beat the browns. even if we suck in cleveland and in week 1 #but SHOULD #and i guess we'll find out in 24 hours 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
