A friendly note to anyone writing fantasy/scifi/other fiction: Don’t just make up words at random.
-If it’s unique to the universe and is relevant enough to actually describe why it’s unique because it’ll be story or character-relevant, then fine.
-If it’s unique and NOT relevant, avoid naming it. Don’t say “they ate otopahs, (which are kind of like potatoes in our world, but blue,) for their supper” when you can just say “they ate a hardy stew.”
-If it’s NOT unique to your world, don’t bloody re name it! You’re already translating everything for the sake of the reader as is (either by in-story mechanics or on a meta level,) so don’t de-translate things for shits and giggles.
I have been irritated by this on more than one occasion when in regards to measurements - no, the creature isn’t 100 walla long, it’s 100 meters, don’t throw random words out and expect me to be impressed by a lot of them.
Don’t want to use metric as it’s not ‘fantasy’ enough? Cubit, foot, span, stride. Human measurements that everyone can relate to and have been in use for millennia, and would appear just as naturally in your personal entry into the fantasy-martial arts-isekai-reincarnation-harem-comedy.
