ForYourArt Announces Artists’ Books and Cookies

Los Angeles – ForYourArt (FYA) announces the second iteration of Artists’ Books and Cookies, an event series devoted to artists' books and encouraging the collection of and community around the Alumnos47 library in Mexico City, Mexico. This one-day event on Sunday, June 30, 11am to 6pm features an exhibition of artists’ books at Ooga Booga #2 drawn from an open call of artists’ books in the greater Los Angeles area. Artists and publishers were invited to submit books for inclusion with a particular focus on artists working with rare materials or unusual techniques. In addition to the exhibition, participating artists are invited to sign up for meetings with curators from Mexico City and Los Angeles who will review their work. Located at 356 S. Mission Road in Boyle Heights, Ooga Booga is known as an epicenter of the art and independent publishing community. Artist’s Books and Cookies is honored to offer this platform to artists to present their work and invite the inquisitive to share a cookie and explore the practice of artists’ books.  Many of the artists have chosen to donate their books to Alumnos47 library in Mexico City following the exhibition. Alumnos47 seeks to help galvanize the ecosystem around artists’ book and independent publishing around the world and be a hub for locals and visitors in Mexico City. To accompany the exhibition, cookies by Sqirl will be available while supplies last. A special edition cookie will also be available for purchase. The event brings artistic talents and people simply curious about artists’ books together for formal and information exchanges. The first Artists’ Books and Cookies featured presentations by contemporary artists, historians, curators and critics related to the production, history and future of artists’ books. Cookies from across Los Angeles were presented to encourage mingling and dialogue. Through these conversations, Artists’ Books and Cookies series provides a platform to discuss the definition of an artist book and the medium of artists’ books within today's contemporary art landscape. About Biblioteca Alumnos47 Biblioteca Alumnos47 is a library conceived as a dynamic and active entity. It is focused on contemporary art and is devoted to stimulating academic research and creating new audiences for contemporary art. The organization is curating the very first public collection of artists’ books in Mexico, with a special emphasis on handmade books. Biblioteca Alumnos47 will be the centerpiece of a new, multi-functional space designed by Didier Faustino (Fall 2014) that will serve as a meeting point in San Miguel Chapultepec for Mexico City’s contemporary art community. The A47 Mobile Library, designed by Productora, currently operates in different communities in Mexico City: “a truck carrying over 1,200 volumes of visual art and culture... (it) travels the streets of Mexico City, providing the residents of various neighborhoods in the capital with access to its contents” (Domus). The A47 Mobile Library shares the Foundation’s growing book collection with the public and reflects the dynamism and flexibility of each of its projects. Alumnos47 Foundation is a civil association based in Mexico City that encourages dialogue through reflection and debate around contemporary art practices.
