They’d always worked well together, ever since their fight against Gerard, even since Toshiro had revealed to him that there was more beneath his childlike exterior. Now, that was the only Toshiro Hitsugaya people saw, new recruits and new students would never know of the young captain from before the war, now they only saw the older, more mature Toshiro. In a way, he reminded Byakuya of himself; young and brash, yet now both of them bloomed into their true self, be it from sakura or ice. The thought of how far they’d both come over the decades always brought a soft smile to his face, a smile he only ever allowed one person to see. “You’re smiling,” Toshiro pointed out, his own face stoic, yet his eyes twinkled knowingly with mirth. They were in their usual private room of their favourite izakaya, a place where they would come and be themselves without anyone else seeing or knowing that their relationship went beyond that of colleagues. “Indeed I am,” Byakuya agreed. “And with good reason, for I am here with you.” The subsequent blush and the indignant splutter from the other man only fuelled Byakuya’s smile even more.

As soon as I knew this and started thinking about it, Mature Hitsugaya’s first apperance came into my head, and then the marvelous Geishaaa gave the prompt and it just fit.
