THREE MONTHS BEFORE PROCEDURE

THERAPIST:

There had been a time when you had been young where you had been just as loudly bold as your counterpart. Your words had been just as loud as your actions are presently, but over time as age and growth continued, the patterns that your companions had once found amusing instead became seen as callous. You had learned quickly to clip your speech, to let your actions do the speaking, and to let your counterpart guide your life. You didn’t wish to be cruel, but the inherent bluntness of your nature made it difficult to understand others and for them to understand you. You couldn’t trust yourself but you could always trust him to guide you.

You learned how to observe and to understand, to be able to adjust yourself for those around you. Ignoring the bitter coil around you, as you had to adjust while others never adjusted to you. As the years went on, the coil became easier and easier to ignore, especially as life became easier and the joys with your counterpart increased and as you and he earned respect and adoration. But adoration wasn’t love.

You hadn’t quite realized that until your counterpart’s departure. They adored you yes, but they didn’t love you. They didn’t understand you, they just respected you and they respected him. Now, the coil is always there, and with it the reminder of what you had done to yourself.

But really, who even were you? Was he even worth preserving? What you are now isn’t anything but a mirror, but a mirror must be better than the cruel child you had been.

Now, you are guide-less, and while you are not quite falling back into what you once were, your ability to mirror is gone and with it the stable performance you existed in is gone too. Your grief was expected, of course it was, but to still be so prevalent, your inability to move forward was disruptive to those around you. Your presence was ruining the atmosphere of those around you, killing the normalcy of regular life.

Aren’t you supposed to be smiling Emmet? It’s not a good look for the station to have you be so miserable all the time. You need to get a grip on yourself, everyone misses him too, you can’t neglect your work just because you’re grieving, nobody else is.

The words didn’t help. Of course they didn’t. They were cruel, and they were turning you cruel in turn. You didn’t want to be cruel, you never have, it is just a part of your natural state. You find yourself too honest for the general masses, and without the balance of your counterpart you lose your charm. You were sure that if you weren’t so stuck as a mirror of him, you wouldn’t be so bad. You wished that you could be the you that you had pretended to be, it hadn’t felt like pretending when he was around, so why does it now?

If you're talking to someone who has experienced medical mistreatment or knows someone who experienced medical mistreatment, and they're talking about it trying to bring awareness

Don't be the type of douche that says "nuh uh, you're lying" or "stop spreading misinformation"

Especially when it's a very common complaint

If you can't be asked to face an uncomfortable truth, that's a you problem, but don't project that onto victims

Even after the experiment ended the thought of him just continually writing these reports to no one, reaching out for something that, despite being so fucking unethical in hindsight, was still something that gave him such hope and companionship......
