Finished watching the Backrooms movie today and I thought I might cast my two cents to the fandom here.

It's a Backrooms movie done right. I've always loved the concept of the Backrooms and the movie nails the liminal spaces and uncanny feeling almost perfectly. Beautifully made sets, perfectly framed cinematography and stunning colour-grading which really sold the whole nostalgia feeling. Clark and Mary are both very nuanced characters which I appreciate greatly.

The cinematography is genuinely so breath-taking, the movie doubles up as a photography book to me.

I love how open-ended and ambiguous everything really is, and can be left up to the viewer's personal interpretation.

I think the roleplay scenario between Clark and Mary really more or less sets up the entire premise of the movie. I definitely think that wasn't the first time they've done that particular scenario, considering how familiar Mary is with her lines. I feel as though the whole point of a roleplay exercise is to walkthrough the scenario in a better headspace and to acknowledge one's own faults, maybe even play the scenario out differently but Clark never does any of that. It seems more as though he was trying to justify his actions to himself and wanted to simply vent his anger and frustrations somewhere.

We're literally told from the beginning that despite him going to therapy and consistently complaining about his life, he doesn't actually want to change anything. Foreshadowing much? Haha. Also, I believe the first time around, Mary was the one to initiate with a reluctant Clark, yet in the ending their roles were reversed.

The way Clark talks to Captain Clark makes me think they've co-existed for a period of time before Mary arrived. I personally think when Mary crashed out on Clark, it finally snapped him back to reality. The reason why I think Captain Clark turns on Clark in the end is because Clark, despite saying he wants to stay in the Backrooms and remained unchanged... wants change. The thought alone was enough. His entity is shaped by how people remember him, and I suppose he's remembered as an aggressive man who refuses change for himself and perhaps even those around him.

The stark contrast between the other entities made out of... foam? Or something, while Captain Clark bleeds actual blood. Could be possible that in the past, he regularly got into fights which left him bleeding a lot. Could represent how he's more alive and fits in the Backrooms more as compared to reality. Could represent the complete opposite, where even in the Backrooms, his entity is still the only odd one out. Afterall none of the other entities (in the movie atleast) are aggressive or bleed as Captain Clark does.

I think that's part of the charm of this movie. It partially makes sense, partially incomprehensible.
