It’s hard to get used to touching Dream again. Something that had once been second nature has become unfamiliar, tentative.

George, a creature of habit, despises it.

More than that, he despises that he’s the one that has to reach out these days. Dream has always been the handsy one: impatient, one hand at George’s waist, laying a possessive touch; or his face, stroking tenderly; or (if they’re really alone) his thighs, coaxing them open while Dream presses reverent kisses inside.

Before the prison, before the wars, Dream is the tactile one, and George basks in the physical attention.

After the prison, after the wars, George wants to bask in the physical attention, but there’s none forthcoming.

Not that Dream isn’t affectionate: of course he is. The two of them spend their time moving from biome to biome, avoiding eyes, avoiding villages, avoiding the past. Dream cooks breakfast, and watches with attentive eyes as George eats. Dream tends to the garden, and always makes sure to leave the little spot George likes to nap in tidy and plantless. Dream wakes George up when he falls asleep on the couch, wheezes a laugh, tells him to go to bed or he’ll end up with a crick in his neck.

Dream lets George touch him, but doesn’t touch in return. It takes him a pitifully long time before he realizes that Dream is afraid.

When he realizes, things change quickly.

George isn’t used to making the first move, but he’s always been different for Dream. They’ve spent so long pining after each other that getting reacquainted with Dream’s body is a pleasure after all these years. Special attention is paid to the scars on Dream’s back, to the crow’s feet crinkles at the sides of his eyes, to the weight he slowly begins to regain around his stomach after months of being starved. George feigns disinterest, nonchalance, but his body says otherwise.

Tonight, they sleep in the same bed. This isn’t always the case — Dream has nightmares; sometimes, George is impossible to rouse for a day or two — but tonight has been a good night.

George lays on his side, and maps over Dream’s freckles with one languid finger, feigning ignorance to the shivers he draws from his partner.

“Hmm,” he hums, his dark eyes roving over Dream’s body. He connects his finger from one mole beside his hip bone to the one just below his nipple, and smiles. “Pretty.”

“Hmh?” Dream stirs. Bright eyes blink open. George tries to resist the urge to kiss him at first, but he’s never been good at practicing self restraint. Their lips meet, and Dream tastes like hot cocoa and soup.

(It’s a positive change from when they’d kissed after the prison break. Dream had tasted of death, then. George had endeavoured from that moment to make him better.)

“What was that for?” Dream mumbles sleepily. Soft moonlight pools on his chest, his side, his shoulder.

George savours the sight. The beautiful part is, he gets to see it almost every night, whether they sleep together or not.

“Nothing,” he says.

Dream frowns. “You said something. I heard you.”

“I said you’re stupid.”

His boyfriend’s eyes crinkle upwards. It’s code for you’re gorgeous, you’re beautiful, you’re perfect. “You’re stupid,” he returns. “Come here.”

Grumbling, George wraps supple limbs around him, and clings tightly.

Dream chuckles. His voice is still hoarse from the prison, but growing stronger every day. “I’m not going anywhere, you know.”

“I know.” George contents himself with settling his head in the space between Dream’s jaw and neck, breathing in the familiar scent. “I’m making sure of that.”

And the words, selfish as they are, make Dream relax, and when he drifts off to sleep again, there’s a smile on his face.

random hc i came up with just now: in canon, dream was the one to give george his glasses/goggles, which basically function like his irl colorblind goggles. it took months, nearly a year to find something, but once dream heard george lament about not being able to properly see a rainbow or the sunset, he was set on finding something. do the goggles work as perfectly as they do irl? no, he's still to some degree colorblind, but they still work.

flash forward a few years, dream is in prison, george has stopped wearing his goggles as much because "tHe mEmOrY iS tOo pAiNfUl" or whatever. XD questions his eyesight, to which george replies that he's colorblind. one snap later and goggles just like his old ones manifest into his hands. putting them on, they work so much better, every little color-related detail now visible. george remarks that someone else once gave him basically the exact same thing as a gift, to which XD laughs. "i'd think that these would be of better quality in comparison to whatever a mere mortal gave you."

and they are, they really are, but they weren't a culmination of a year's worth of questing and research. they weren't presented by a stupid, grinning dream with dirt in his hair and a singed hoodie. they weren't first put on with tears from both parties, hugs and smiles and sobs all happening at once in one beautiful moment.

"yeah, i guess they're better."

given that there's one week for cdnfweek (AUG 14TH MARK IT DOWN!!) I decided to do a little investigative work and compile every bit of cdnf lore I could remembered or find from old vods and screenshots 🌟

even if you don't participate in the week I hope this serves as an inspiration for latter cdnf works, to bring a little bit of nostalgia or just to inform yourself on cdnf because is one of my favorite things ever
