it was meant to be a family vacation - a chance for them all to reconnect on a level they hadn't been capable of previously - at least, so her mother claimed. daphne was tempted to tell the woman it was due to the fact that she'd married so soon after telling her daughter about the man, and there had been little time to get to know him before they'd exchanged 'i do's'. it didn't help that her mother had offered some flimsy excuse to leave the extended trip almost a week early - claiming work needed her for some last minute product launch. daphne had rolled her eyes, muttered how she'd be staying because she'd already taken the time off herself.

that morning, she'd woken early, done yoga out in the yard and showered before she saw the man. adorned in an emerald green bikini, daphne offered a little wiggle of her fingers in greeting. "thought i'd lay out for a bit. enjoy the sun and the pool. i think mom kept those dinner reservations if you wanted to go, just the two of us?"

Betty never liked to do anything slow. So being back at the gym only four days after the fiasco at Azkaban— even though she was still processing and healing— made her feel productive. Focusing on her physical recovery in the gym helped keep her focused on the overall goal. This way she could still feel useful, knowing she would be back out in the wild in no time. 

Fate seemed to have other plans for Betty’s recovery. She had just finished up her workout when the explosion ripped through the studio. For the second time in less than a week, Betty was being knocked off kilter as the ground beneath her feet shook. Not being in the direct line of the blast this time had the advantage of minimal ringing ears as Betty assessed any damage she may have incurred.

knowing so little about either of their birth parents, it had occasionally been a topic of conversation - little thoughts on who they might have been, where they were from, what their ancestry looked like. once or twice, they'd joked about what it might mean, if there was some connection before them, and the odds? it seemed impossible. but with the topic of potentially wanting kids in the future arising, they'd both wanted some additional family history ; genetic condition and the like. the results had come in when he'd been at work and she'd been to curious not to look. now, she sat on their couch, having spent the hour or two she'd been home alone researching potential inaccuracies. the woman jumped when the front door open, swallowing the lump in her throat.

"hey sweetie - welcome home!" she calls, voice trembling slightly. "can um - once you've settled in can we chat?"

bare save the thin paper gown she'd been given to change into, the woman lay with her hands covering her stomach, feet already positioned in the stirrups waiting for the doctor. blinking up at the florescent lights and plain white tiles, the woman startled slightly at the knock on the door. "c-come in!" she called.

the knowledge that the world had ended was only made worse when the scans revealed that their vault was all that was left. filled with nothing but extended family, many of the older generation was determined that those currently alive ought to be the last of humanity. but the want to live - to survive and thrive - had taken root in the younger generation and only grown at the encouragement of the newly formed trio. daphne and valentina had departed from living among their own parents to be with logan - the arguments of either household having echoed through the vault for hours before a deadly sort of silence had fallen. it had been weeks since valentina's family had looked at her, and longer still since daphne's parents had spoken to her.

at the sound of the front door opening, daphne jumped up, beaming in logan's direction. "perfect timing - we were just talking about you!" valentina shoots her a glance - as if asking her cousin to allow the man the opportunity to settle in before they bombarded him. "well - talking about us," she continues, entirely ignoring valentina's glance. "we've gathered a bit of a following, and while people are clearly starting to listen, it would really hit home if we showed how serious we were about this, right? so i spoke to cousin dottie and she said she'll filter as many inquiries as possible over the next two days and only come get us if we're really needed and we can spend the next two days just-"

"relaxing," valentina cuts in with a sigh. "for now, we're just going to relax. here, let me take your coat and you can sit down. do you want a beer?"

having been convinced someone would recognize the signature red of her hair and wanting to lean into the mystery that was meant to surround the event, daphne had tucked auburn locks beneath a brunette wig. the anonymity had been thrilling and more than once she'd recognized others with notable features they'd not bothered hiding, only for none of them to connect the dots in relation to her. perhaps that's why she'd been so shamelessly flirting with the other all night, giggling her way toward a back room while the party was in full swing. the moment their fingers had risen to try and pull off the mask skewing their features, digits had wrapped around their wrists and the woman had leaned in to kiss them - drawing away with a nip of their lower lip. "no - no, leave it on."
