Jonah. 28. Let’s talk about books.

“I can’t decide if I’m pleased or disappointed to hear it,” Lily said. At least it wasn’t boring, though with their desert island adventure only just beginning, she supposed there was plenty of time for that to change. She only hoped not. “How do they normally start?”

“Interesting,” Jonah said, a grin pulling at his face, his demeanor finally starting to brighten. “What kind of sort would you guess me if that were how I started all dates?” He asked curiously. “Usually with a nice car ride— do magic people travel like that always or— and I’m truly sorry if this is a stupid question— do you use cars as well?”

“Maybe it just means something different for them,” suggested Calista. “I wouldn’t know anything about maths either.” She scrunched up her nose just thinking about it. “Would you want to find out more?”

Jonah thought about what that might mean in terms of differences among magic and nonmagic folx. At her question he paused. “About maths or magic?” He asked, trying to keep a neutral expression, hoping she was referring to the latter.

Lily, more used to travelling by portkey, was faring much better than the stranger beside her. She settled on the sand as she waited for the dizziness to pass but she soon wished she had sat further away as vomit splashed down beside her. Shifting away, she said, “That’s the worst start to a date I’ve ever had.” Not that she’d had many but still. “May as well hit one bar, at least. You get used to it.” She pulled out her wand and vanished the mess.

Jonah watched in awe as she waved her wand— her actual freaking magic wand— and his mishap disappeared. He sat back on the sand, the view wasn’t half bad now that he could see straight again. “I promise not all my dates start out like this.” He said as the first wave of embarrassment hit him. “Shit— I’m sorry.” He rubbed a hand over his face.

“Well, I’ve not gone anywhere, but I have heard that there’s this area in London. It’s called Diagonally? Like diagonal lines, I suppose,” she said, not entirely sure she was even saying it correctly. “Anyway, Diagonally is apparently found through some little pub. I don’t know if I’d ever want to actually go in on my own.”

Jonah listened with rapt attention as she spoke about the potential of a magic pub. “Strange name for a magic zone— maybe it’s like— diagonally perpendicular with— I’m not going to lie, I haven’t thought about this kind of maths in years.” He hoped perhaps that the healer would come back and he could ask her more questions.

Jonah felt like his insides had been pulled out of his butt and then shoved back in through his face. The world was still spinning as they landed on the remote island. “If we win this money I’ll spend my half on not ever having to travel like that again.” He said before promptly losing his lunch.

“You’re kidding? Magic isn’t real. Or maybe it is? The thing is you’re saying it’s the real thing but that doesn’t other people believe that so really that is your belief.”

“You not been paying attention to the news for the last four months?”

“Well, sure, but certainly magic must have its limits.” Of course, Calista had no real way of knowing. Although all their books were at her fingertips, she hadn’t exactly gone on to look into that, certainly nothing like pocket dimensions. “Have you tried going anywhere… magical?” She could only assume he wasn’t a wizard if only because he had posed the question in the first place.

“Maybe— honestly I don’t know. Haven’t had too much thought about it. Just kinda spurts of thought here and there.” He shrugged. “Wouldn’t even know where to start— you know any magical places?”

Daphne felt hurried as she entered the café because she arrived right on time, which was practically late in her book. The irritation with herself dissipated when she laid eyes on her companion, a warm smile curling onto her lips. “I haven’t kept you long, have I?”

Jonah looked up, a smile on his face as she spoke. “Not at all. I just got here.” He stood, ever the gentleman, and moved to pull her chair out.

“Well, why not. People will believe what they want to believe. They say imagination is the true magic carpet.”

“Yeah but I’m not talking about imagination— I’ve been there in my imagination— I’m talking about the real thing— it’s not people beliefs, it’s the real tangible thing.”

Calista looked up as someone spoke up. “You mean like from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?” she asked. “I don’t know. That’s just a whole other world, isn’t it? This is still the same world, just… bigger in a way.”

“It is,” Jonah nodded— “but why can’t it be real too? It was a world made from magics, yeah? Who’s to say that the magic folx can’t create little— I don’t know pocket dimensions or something?” He grinned thinking of The Doctor and his magic box. “Bigger on the inside.”

Jonah was completely nervous about getting coffee with Daphne. For no reason other than she was lovely company to keep and she shared a love of literature that was rare in Cardiff.

“Well, I think I have what I need here,” said Bailey as she waved the book, before tucking it under her arm. She moved to the front of the shop now, where the till was, counting out some money and leaving it for him. “That should cover it,” she said. “Until next time. bookstore boy.” She gave him a salute before walking out.

Daphne smiled as she placed her hand into his. “Daphne Davenport.” She paused for a moment. “Will you point me in the direction of the book you’re reading? And something I simply have to read. I’d like to come prepared next time I see you.”

Her hand was warm and soft. “I think I can do that, yeah.” He smiled, grabbing a copy of The Female Quixote by Charlotte Lennox before taking her upfront to the register where the Book Club books were. Ringing her up with the members discount, they parted ways, his day just a little bit brighter.

“Hey.” Adrian stopped and held his hand out for Jonah to do the same. Dramatically, he declared: “He’s a recovering addict. Be kind. I can see that this is a tense situation for you. You work in a bookstore, my lost friend doesn’t know what an ashtray is… but questioning his morals in a time like this isn’t—” 

Crash. Bang. AHH.

Adrian grimaced uncomfortably at Jonah. “Any idea what section that might’ve come from?” He feigned innocence poorly. 

Jonah didn’t feel nearly as guilty as the man wanted him to feel, especially not as he visibly flinched at the sound of books and perhaps some shelving crashing to the floor rang through the shop. Thankfully he heard no glass but he wouldn’t hold his breath, the day was still young. 

Son. Of. A. Bitch.

Jonah sighed deeply before turning toward where he suspected the crash had come from. “Yeah, alright, come on.” He led the way, knowing he was in for a long day.

“Don’t get enough of that having this place right in the middle of Cardiff?” she asked. Though, she supposed he had to live there, too, if he was a muggle. “Can talk to loons any time you want.”

“Yeah, they don’t really come into the shop much though. Sleep under the awnings, pee round the back alley. Those types of things. Gotta go out to them for conversation.” This time of year. He’d rather freeze inside than out since the radiator was broken more often than not.

She looked at him, eyebrow raising as if to show that her point had been made by this interaction alone. “Yes, I can tell that you’re really great with people. No wonder your store is filled to the brim with customers. Your charm and charisma just draws them in.” She gestured around to the clearly empty shop.

“Middle of the work day.” He shrugged. “Just means I get more one on one time with the loons.”
