Dinosaur Expeditions C.I.C. - The Story so far...... Part 2
The former staff decided that they would continue to organise Fossil Hunting Trips on the local beaches so they set-up a website printed some leaflets and established Dinosaur Expeditions Cooperative in 2011.
In July 2012 the owners of the Dinosaur Farm contacted the former staff and to our surprise offered the former building as a base of operations if we still wanted it. We rushed over expecting to see the Dinosaur Farm Museum's familiar display cabinets and children's activities but sadly all of that had gone. All that was left, were four paintings on the wall and a mounted cast of the front leg of the Brachiosaur.
We decided that we would set-up the Dinosaur Expeditions, Conservation and Palaeoart Centre (a.k.a. the Dinosaur Expeditions Centre) and build completely new displays and activites using budget-range kitchen cabinets and whatever we could get from friends, family and other well-wishers.
The centre included a diorama of the wealden landscape with a large painting by internationally renowned palaeoartist John Sibbick; a 'barn-sized' skeletal reconstruction of a Brachiosaur and display cabinets showcasing a variety Isle of Wight and international fossils, supplied by volunteers and local fossil collectors.
We opened our doors to the public at the start of the Easter Holidays at the end of March 2013. However we weren't fully operational until the end of June when we mounted a life-size Quetzalcoatlus model created by Portsmouth University.
A busy summer followed with weekly Dinosaur Discovery Days at Blackgang Chine and almost daily fossil hunting trips on the beach.
Over the winter of 2013/14 we added to the displays by developing a Children's activity area and sculpted more bones for the reconstruction of the Brachiosaur. Unfortunately time ran out before we were able to mount the ribs when we re-opened at the end of March 2014.
Dinosaur Expeditions C.I.C. - The Story So far...... Part 1
Back in 1992, Palaeontologist Steve Hutt (curator of the Museum of Isle of Wight) discovered a 40ft Brachiosaur Dinosaur Skeleton at Barnes High, near Brighstone on the South-west coast of the Isle of Wight, UK.
Known as the 'Barnes High Sauropod' it was excavated by notable local fossil collectors with support from Portsmouth University. The remains were discovered on the cliff belonging to dairy farmers Geoff and Barbara Phillips. Once carefully excavated they were taken to a 17th century barn on the farm and local volunteers were recruited to help conserve the fossilised skeleton.
The discovery generated a lot of publicity and in 1993 the farm became known as the Dinosaur Farm and the building housing the fossils developed into the Dinosaur Farm Museum.
In 2001 the Museum of Isle of Wight Geology closed and a new multi-million pound museum was opened called Dinosaur Isle. The Barnes High Sauropod forms one of the main exhibits.
In 2010 the Dinosaur Farm Museum closed to the public. Several members of staff and volunteers thought the closure was a great shame and asked the owners if they would consider allowing them to re-open the museum. However the owners had decided to retire and their decision to close it was sadly final.
Dinosaur Expeditions Blog
Hello,
Welcome to the Dinosaur Expeditions C.I.C. Blog.
Dinosaur Expeditions is a Community Interest Company based on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom.
We were created by local fossil enthusiasts to promote responsible fossil collecting and the creation of original palaeoart.
We have set-up the Dinosaur Expeditions Conservation and Paleoart Centre (a.k.a. The Dinosaur Expeditions Centre) at the site of the former Dinosaur Farm Museum, near Brighstone in the West Wight.
We are next to six and a half miles of coastline exposing 125 million year old, Lower Cretaceous mud; regarded as one of the best localities for Dinosaur fossils in Europe.
This blog will showcase the work our volunteers do to discover and conserve new fossil discoveries and then interpret them through palaeoart.
Thanks for reading.
Oliver
