I drive a cab for a worker cooperative. I really enjoy it. Sometimes people get in my cab and exclaim, “You’re so young!” or “I’ve never had a woman cab driver before!” They ask what I think of it. I say I like driving and talking to people, so it’s the perfect job for me. Once someone asked me if I carry mace. I didn’t answer.

People tell me so many weird things when they’re riding in my cab. I feel like cab drivers--and service workers generally--are often on the front lines of listening to people who need to say something, to someone. I’ve had people tell me about being in jail; about being raped, and car jacked; about weird family disputes and legal battles. I’m just some lady. But I listen as best I can.

Cabbies contend that in dense and dynamic urban terrain like London’s, the brain of a cabby is a superior navigation tool — that Sat-Nav doesn’t know about the construction that has sprung up on Regent Street, and that a driver who is hailed in heavily-trafficked Piccadilly Circus doesn’t have time to enter an address and wait for his dashboard-mounted robot to tell him where to steer his car.
