omfg ;~; thank yo u so much???
Hey its Katie I don't know if you remember me but Im super nervous about trying out for DA and I was wondering if you have any tips or anything that could help me with the interview or anything really? Thanks a million mannn
dude dude shuuushh it’s really not that bad. I remember being super duper nervous but believe me once you get in the room and see all the teachers and other people trying out you’ll feel fine.
So there’s the basic info for visual art tryouts like bring a portfolio that has at least like five good technique pieces (still lifes, portraits, landscapes, etc. Things that show your skill and direct observation abilities.)
You should also throw in a few personal pieces that show your creativity and originality (no stylization/anime/cartoon period end of story don’t even try it you’ll be sorry believe me.)
It is also important to know how to write a good critique on an art piece because they will have you choose one of their selected masterworks and write a critique on it. I remember I had Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. Here’s a perfect guide to the four things you need in a critique, You do these, and you’ll stand out: http://www.wikihow.com/Critique-Artwork
You’ll finally be asked to sketch a still life set up in the middle of the room. The still life consists of over 100 objects arranged on a long table, so you’ll have plenty of subjects and compositions to choose from. There’s no real erasing with this, so take your time and make sure to look at the subject more than your paper. They’ll provide you with drawing tools and paper.
So yeah that’s basically it, after all that you go home and wait for your letter! I really wish you the best of luck. Douglas Anderson is a fantastic school that I am truly proud to be a part of. I graduate this year and it is good to know we are leaving the school in good hands! If you have any more questions or if anything isn’t clear please feel free to let me know!
