written as a birthday gift for caesteckerz.  i've lost track of who has how many points, but the truth of the matter is in my heart, you're the winner. happy birthday mars. thank you for never failing to bring a smile to my face (and tears to my eyes). i love you.

The girl’s face is pretty, he thinks, despite the sadness in her eyes, the deep fatigue that suggests she hasn’t slept well in possibly weeks.

She manages to flash a grin at him, but her smile is weak. She settles herself in the seat next to his bed and places a warm hand to his forehead.

“Fitz,” she whispers, her voice shaking. “I knew you’d pull through.”

He knows enough from overhearing his doctors speak that his memory has been compromised, but he knows enough to recognize that he must know her pretty well, but he can’t piece together any details, he can’t connect a memory to her face.

It tugs at his heart in a way he doesn’t want to think about, so he pushes it to the back of his mind at forces a smile in her direction.

“They’re saying…,” her voice breaks again, and she has to clear her throat. When she speaks again,  “Do you know who I am?”

He wants to say yes. Yes is the answer she wants. But yes is not the truth. And as much as the truth will hurt her, telling her something just because it’s what she wants could destroy her.

So instead, he shakes his head and he watches her try not to collapse in front of him. She holds herself steady and lifts her chin, trying to keep the tears from falling.

He wishes he could comfort her somehow, but even if he could move, he wouldn’t know how. Would a pat on the arm or shoulder suffice? A gentle caress of the cheek? Or would that be too intimate?

A nurse walks in and he blinks and looks away, his eyes focusing on a painting of an abstract painting on the wall.

The girl turns to smile at the nurse, and then excuses herself as she stands and leaves the room.

He doesn’t blame her. He hates this. If he could leave, too, he wouldn’t hesitate.

When the girl returns to his side the following day, he can’t help but wonder why.
