“Do… let's stay at my apartment for a few days? Less memories y'know?”
(oh noo i wanted to write fluffffff- oh well, y’all get some fluffy angst :))
The passing of time was a strange thing. For the Giles Corey Tigers, it always seemed to slow down around the end of summer; the anniversary no one ever wanted to celebrate came too soon each year. Even after five years of grief, Cairo couldn’t seem to get away from the town she planned on leaving behind. An entire year out of college and she visited her parents far too often. Cairo’s girlfriend told her that enough.
“Maybe you just don’t visit yours enough,” Cairo would retort. “It’s not like you’re too far away.” She knew those words would hurt Annleigh, so after a swift apology Cairo hung up for the night signing off with a simple I love you. The couple hated to fight, but they both knew that those weeks brought out the worst in them and they could get through it together.
What didn’t help Cairo though was the fact that her childhood home was two houses away from... the house she wanted to be away from? It was too painful to think about, and even more so to execute.
The night before she was supposed to leave, Cairo’s phone rang out in that familiar ringtone Annleigh set her number as.
“We’re two blocks away from each other, Annleigh. You couldn’t of just walked over?”
Annleigh laughed on the other side of the phone. “You yelled at me the last time I did that!”
“It was raining and you came into my apartment soaking wet!”
“I didn’t bring an umbrella!”
“Who doesn’t bring an umbrella out in the rain?? And it’s not exactly the surprise I wanted at 7am on a Tuesday anyways.” Cairo was laughing now too.
“Not my fault you’re not a morning person like me.” Pausing for only a second, Annleigh continued to speak. “Cai, are you okay? I feel like you’ve been avoiding me all week, and I know you don’t like being left alone...”
“I’m just- I need to see my parents this week. It calms us all down a little bit and I-” Deep breath Cai. She’ll understand. “Ann I don’t know if I can do this.”
On the other side of the phone, Annleigh softened, “No one’s making you...”
“That’s the issue, isn’t it? I keep doing this to myself willingly.”
“We only live twenty minutes out.. If you going during the day I can go with you and maybe see my family? Do… let's stay at my apartment for a few days? Less memories y'know?”
“...Like a sleepover?”
“Cai, I know what you’re thinking but we’ve been dating for two years.” Thinking quickly she added, “If you want I’ll sleep on the pullout couch and you can have my bedroom.”
“Fuck... Yeah. I think that’ll work. The me staying over thing but I am not kicking you out of your room babe.”
“You want to sleep on the pullout couch?”
Cairo scoffed. “No...”
“Oh. Oh.”
“I’ll be over in a half hour.”
“Damn, I’m gonna have to clean this place up fast.”
“I don’t believe for a second that Annleigh O’Daniel’s apartment is dirty.”
“...It’s not. I just wanted you to be impressed on how fast I can clean.”
“Yep, cause nothing turns me on more than how fast you can clean up.”
“I know that was sarcasm, but I’m going to let it pass.”
“See you soon love.” Hanging up the phone, Cairo zipped up her suitcase and took a deep breath knowing that the weekend was going to be alright.
