Prompt: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries- Prank War
Jane couldn’t say, really, exactly how it started. Hugh swore up and down it was Miss Phryne’s fault, and Dot insisted just as much that it was Detective Robinson’s fault. But Jane was a practical girl — always had been, always would be — and she suspected there was blame enough to go around both sides with some left over for Dot and Hugh and Mr. Butler, too, probably.
Jane first realized something was going on a week or so ago, when Miss Phryne came marching into the house followed by Ces and Bert and a powerful stench. Jane had been practicing in the parlour, but she got up from the piano to investigate as they all tromped past her.
"That is the very last bitter end to that — that man!” Miss Phryne exclaimed, slapping something down on the kitchen table. It was wrapped — badly — in newspaper, and it was definitely the cause of the smell.
Mr. Butler whisked it away into the trash. “I take it the car will need to be cleaned thoroughly, Miss?”
"It will need to be exorcised, Mr. Butler,” Miss Phryne huffed. “It was hidden inside the door frame! What kind of a lunatic hides a dead fish inside a door frame?”
"Didn’t you just stuff it under his seat, Miss?" Cec asked, his brow furrowed.
"That’s not the point, Cec. The point is that this is a clear escalation of hostilities."
"Blimey," Bert muttered, and nudged Cec to be off.
Jane caught Cec’s elbow as he went past. “Who put the fish in the car?” she whispered.
Cec leaned down, casting a careful eye on where Miss Phryne was still fuming and being fussed over by Mr. Butler. “Robinson — who else’d have the nerve? She put it in his car yesterday morning and it showed up in her car this afternoon.”
Cec chucked her on the chin. “Kids these days, eh?” he said, and followed Bert out.
Jane never got the full story, but really, who started it wasn’t as important as other things at the moment.
Like how to get that horse off the police station roof.
