I can’t believe I neglected to post this guy. You recognize the pattern and form, the difference is dimensionality. Rather than stack the 5 prints one on one, I created a rudimentary frame to alter the distances from one plane to the next.

Overall I like the effect and I foresee using this structure to create studies of light and color.

The first image is the original with very minimal and uniform distance between the layers. The second image shows the piece without staging. The final image incorporated a little staging and light to make that final plane pop.

End of the year smorgasbord!

The top two images were gifts I gave my sister and parents for the holidays. The triptych was very difficult to set up, but I'm happy I didn't just paste three prints together.

Manitou Waters is the name of the wooded neighborhood in rural Michigan where my parents built their cabin. You'll notice similar effects and aesthetics to the House of Cards poster from before. Unfortunately the image loses its luster under that terrible lighting, but take my word for it, it is dynamic.

Next we have a few gifts that they gave me: huge new color and sketching pencil sets (multiplying my color pencils by a factor of 4), new set of X-acto knives, a gorgeous book on color (physics and theory), and a portable blue-tooth speaker for my studio!

Last, but certainly not least, I've provided a look at my respirator filters. I hadn't changed the filters since I finished my thesis in 2011. I think my lungs will appreciate the update.

Below the gifts are two new variations of my Cairo pentagon pattern.

Excess prints were cut up and assembled into the long stripped mass you see; with careful attention to maintain the overall pattern.

The last image is the direction I want to go into as 2014 begins. I've taken 5 prints and selectively cut away from top layers to reveal bottom ones. I also wedged several strips of paper between the layers to gain that 3rd dimension to the piece.

'Team Merkley' (2013) Series of eight spray stencil prints

I have been interning with Senator Merkley's reelection campaign for about three months now. This piece was made as holiday gifts to the other members of the team. The coloring for each print corresponds to the respective colleges of the staff.

While making these prints I became aware of a larger project: tribalism. It was Elise's Ohio State print that got me thinking about it. As a die hard University of Michigan fan, the colors scarlet and gray illicit strong, negative reactions in me. This is a personal manifestation of tribalism, a dangerous relic from our evolutionary past.

Everyone knows those two or three colors that, grouped together, are either a source of pride or disgust.

When I first made the Cairo Pentagon stencil, I had a good deal of trouble deciding what colors I should use. By assigning a print to a person, I can now choose the colors that represent one of the tribes to which they belong.
