Remember that time Degrassi writers didn't have a valid reason to break up Joey and Caitlyn again so instead of letting them be happy they brought in a bad Kevin Smith plot to do it for them? Fiction or not, I can never forgive him for it.
Caitlyn Ryan
I’ve rewatched all of Degrassi: TNG seasons 4 & 5 and half way through season 6 and I have so many questions! Like what did the ferret Bueller look like? How did Spinner manage to stop that car so perfectly before hitting Jimmy when Spinner was so drunk? Why did Spike let Manny re-audition for that agent when one of the conditions of her living with the Simpson-Nelson clan was no acting beyond the drama club? What is Jack’s last name? Did JT ever get to say goodbye to his baby? Why couldn’t Jimmy finish his credits during the summer? Why did Darcy tell Kim about what Spinner did to Jimmy? And why did Kim tell her douchebag boyfriend from Friendship Club too? And did Marco ever go to the Caribbean with Caitlyn on that AIDS piece? How’s Ryan’s Planet going? Do Joey and Caitlyn EVER get back together? Why did Ellie like Craig so much? Why didn’t Ellie date Jimmy? Ellie and Jimmy > Ashley and Jimmy How did JT get his TV job back so quickly? How many illegal things is Jay involved in -- drug dealing, street racing -- and not to mention that whole having every girl plus Alex sucking his dick? And why would Peter’s dad get him such a nice car when Peter is obviously irresponsible? Who raised Amberley to be so irritating? Why did Sean all of the sudden decide he wanted Emma back? And where did Peter get the pot from to plant in Sean’s locker? And why didn’t Emma figure out Peter was scum earlier after she knew what he did to Manny? And why didn’t the video of Manny get like police attention -- she’s still under 18 so it’s child porn! And speaking of the Manny topless video, did Manny ever become an Academy Award winning actress so Peter could sell it for a million dollars? And how old is Jesse that he thinks its okay to screw 18 year old girls who just started university? And why does so many girls wanna go out with Peter knowing how heartless he is? And did Craig ever get his Grammy? Did Caitlyn and Kevin Smith ever get together?
Like there’s so many unanswered questions! I need answers!!!! And I could go on and on with questions....
We Can’t Go Back Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The second his mother’s car drove away, Archie Simpson dropped onto the small bed, completely drained from the long ride from Toronto. He probably should’ve said more to her than, “Thanks,” and “Drive safe.” At the very least, he should’ve thanked her for not spending the whole drive to Banting peppering him with questions.
Outside, students hurried back and forth with boxes and suitcases, dragging their lives out of trunks and back seats. Some were greeting new floormates. Others were hugging their parents goodbye like they were being shipped off to war.
His roommate had said he’d be there at 6:30.
Archie glanced at his watch and forced himself back up. As much as he wanted to lie there and disappear for a while, he still had to unpack. He groaned at the sight of the bags, boxes, and suitcases scattered around the tiny room. His mother must’ve packed half the house and sent it with him.
Not that he didn’t understand why. He’d been the last kid still living at home for a long time. Him leaving wasn’t just a big change for him. It was going to be a big change for her too.
As he dug through one of the overstuffed suitcases, his mind drifted back to the moment he’d accidentally blown up his oldest friend’s summer fling in front of his long-time girlfriend. One sentence, said way too loudly, and suddenly everything in their group had shifted.
“Joey Jeremiah spends the summer dating Caitlin and fucking Tessa,” Archie had announced.
Joey’s face went pale.
Then Archie turned and saw Caitlin standing in the doorway. The look on her face said she’d heard every word.
It wasn’t like Archie to be that cruel. Not usually. But still… Joey had asked for it. He’d spent the whole summer bragging about hooking up with two girls while constantly teasing Archie about having no experience with women.
Then there was Wheels.
Derek Wheeler was in jail now for driving drunk and causing injury and death. A drunk driver had killed his adoptive parents, and then Wheels had gone and done the same thing. He’d driven drunk, seriously injured Lucy, and killed a two-year-old child.
Every time Archie thought about it, his blood boiled.
The worst part was that Wheels still wouldn’t take responsibility. He just did what he always did — blamed everyone else.
Archie picked up a photo of the three of them from junior high, after The Zit Remedy played their first gig. He smiled, but it hurt a little.
What he wouldn’t give to go back to when it was just the three of them, their band, and those ridiculous dreams of rock-and-roll fame.
Mostly Joey’s dreams, but still.
Over at Carleton University, Caitlin Ryan stood in the middle of her small dorm room and took a deep breath.
She was honestly impressed with herself. Somehow, she’d managed to unpack and organize five boxes and two large suitcases in less than an hour. Of course, if Lucy Fernandez had come with her like they’d planned, it would’ve taken twice as long. Maybe longer. The two of them would’ve spent more time talking than actually putting anything away.
But Lucy was still in Toronto, recovering from the terrible injuries she’d suffered in the car accident a few weeks earlier.
Caitlin moved one empty suitcase into the closet by the door, beside the other one. Then she paused, changed her mind, and carried both suitcases back to her bed. She hadn’t met her roommate yet, and for all she knew, the girl could be bringing just as much stuff as Caitlin had.
It was probably better to wait. Once her roommate got there, they could figure out together where everything should go.
Caitlin picked up the envelope from the drugstore. It held the photos from Bronco’s party. She snorted when she saw the words Memorable Moments written across the front in fancy cursive.
Memorable was one word for it.
She had just stepped into the living room to grab the beer Joey had saved for her.
“Dating Caitlin and fucking Tessa.”
Joey turned to look at her. Archie had been clapping, right up until he noticed Caitlin standing in the doorway. Then he got out of the room fast.
“Doing Tessa Campanelli?” Caitlin said, feeling like all the air had been sucked out of the room. “You were doing Tessa Campanelli?”
Joey had been seeing Tessa all summer.
Not long after that, Lucy had left the party with Wheels, who was far too drunk to be behind the wheel. Then came the crash. A little boy was killed. Lucy survived, but not without serious injuries. Wheels was arrested almost immediately for driving under the influence, causing injury and death.
Even though her mother wouldn’t have minded either way, Caitlin was glad she’d driven her to Ottawa. Partly because she was still shaken up from Lucy’s accident. Luckily, the drive had been quiet. Peaceful, even.
Caitlin looked down at her right hand, where Joey’s ring used to be.
He’d given it to her on graduation night. A proposal, technically. It had been a sweet gesture, and she knew that. But she wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment. It wasn’t that she was against marriage. She just wanted a career. She wanted to see the world. She didn’t want to be married at eighteen to the first boy who looked her way.
“Can you believe those two are getting married right after high school?” Lucy had whispered, sounding disgusted. “Talk about a nightmare.”
“I don’t know,” Caitlin had said.
Across the room, Simon Dexter was proudly showing off Alexa Papadopolis and her engagement ring to anyone who would look. They’d been together all through junior high and high school.
“They look pretty happy.”
“Caitlin, have you checked the statistics on teen marriage?” Lucy asked, giggling. “What if they’re terrible in bed?”
This is a first part of my “We Can’t Go Back” any feedback is welcomed 😀
Prologue
Caitlyn walked slowly down the hospital corridor. She peeked into the room and saw Bronco kneeling at the foot of Lucy's bed, looking completely drained. A moment later, he stepped out into the hallway carrying a bouquet of flowers. He set them in a vase nearby and joined her outside the room.
"How is she?" Caitlyn asked quietly once they were out of earshot.
Bronco swallowed hard.
"They don't know if she'll see. They don't know if she'll walk. They don't know anything."
His voice cracked.
"I never should've let her go with him."
Caitlyn pulled him into a hug.
I wish I hadn't had that fight with Lucy, Caitlyn thought, remembering their argument on the drive to the lake house the day before.
"Can I go see her?"
Bronco nodded.
Caitlyn stepped into the room and immediately felt her stomach drop.
Lucy was hooked up to monitors and covered in bandages. Metal shields covered her eyes.
"Luce..."
She moved closer to the bed.
"Caitlyn."
Lucy reached out weakly, searching for her hand.
Everyone kept saying Lucy was lucky to be alive. Right now, Lucy didn't feel lucky at all.
"How are you doing?" Caitlyn asked softly.
"I don't know." Lucy's voice was barely above a whisper. "I can't see anything."
The steady beeping of a monitor filled the silence. Outside, muffled voices drifted through the hallway.
"I don't want to be blind," Lucy croaked.
Caitlyn felt a lump rise in her throat.
"We were supposed to be going to university together."
None of this was fair. Of all people, why Lucy?
Only a few months ago, Lucy Fernandez had seemed unstoppable. She was class president. Valedictorian. She had her whole future mapped out in front of her.
Now she lay in a hospital bed, unable to see what tomorrow would bring.
The doctors weren't offering much hope. They didn't know if she'd ever walk again. They didn't know if she'd ever regain her sight. And even if she did, there were no guarantees she'd ever get back to the person she had been before the crash.
But the Lucy Fernandez Caitlyn knew wasn't someone who quit.
Everything Lucy had accomplished in her eighteen years had come from sheer determination. Whenever life put something in her way, she pushed through it. This would be no different.
The odds were stacked against her, but Lucy would fight them. She'd tackle every setback the same way she'd tackled every challenge before it—with stubbornness, grit, and an absolute refusal to give up.
The road ahead might look different than the one she'd planned. It might be longer, harder, and full of detours she never asked for.
But Caitlyn couldn't believe that Lucy's story ended here.
As she stepped out of York Memorial Hospital and into the bright afternoon sunshine, she stopped and looked up toward the windows where she thought Lucy's room might be.
You'll get your future back, Lucy.
You'll recover.
I just know it.
By some miracle, Snake managed to squeeze one more oversized duffel bag into the already packed car.
His mother had been hovering around him all morning.
"Are you sure you have everything? Do you have enough socks? Did you pack another toothbrush?"
"Yes!" he snapped, his patience finally wearing thin.
He'd packed enough clothes to last until convocation and probably halfway through grad school. How much more stuff could he possibly need?
Running a hand through his reddish-blond hair, he watched his mother hurry back into the house for what felt like the hundredth time.
Was she this bad when Glen left?
A familiar car pulled up to the curb.
Then he heard a familiar voice.
"Snake!"
He turned and frowned.
"Well, I didn't expect to see you here."
Joey walked toward him slowly, his head hanging.
It was the first time they'd spoken since that awful day.
"Yeah, well..." Joey shoved his hands into his pockets. "I went to see Wheels today. He's really upset that you won't talk to him."
Snake's expression didn't change.
"He's upset?" he said bitterly. "His parents were killed by a drunk driver, so he gets drunk and kills a kid?"
Joey looked away.
"He's really messed up."
"He's messed up?" Snake shot back. "What about Lucy? What about that little kid? He was two years old, Joey. Two. He never got a chance to do anything. He's dead. Just gone."
He slammed the trunk shut.
"Just like that."
Joey shook his head.
"Not talking to Wheels isn't going to change any of that."
Snake stared at him.
Then he glanced toward the front door.
What's taking Mom so long?
Joey had almost reached his own car when Snake called after him.
"Listen."
Joey stopped.
"What happened at Bronco's... I was angry."
He walked a little closer.
"Yeah, well, she would've found out eventually."
"I know."
Snake sighed.
"I'm just sorry it happened because of me."
Joey nodded.
An awkward silence settled between them.
"So you're really leaving?"
"Yep."
Snake opened the passenger door.
"Honestly? I'm glad to get out of here."
At that moment, Mrs. Simpson came hurrying out of the house, completely unaware of the conversation she'd interrupted.
"Hello, Joey. How are you?"
"Good," Joey answered politely.
She climbed into the driver's seat.
"Mom, can we go now?" Snake groaned.
Before she could start the car, Joey spoke up again.
"I don't know how to talk to Wheels either. But could you at least try?"
Mrs. Simpson looked between them curiously.
"Let's go," Snake muttered.
It had already been a long morning, and he was out of patience.
The sooner he got out of town, the better.
"We've been friends since Grade 8," Joey said, leaning against the open window.
Snake looked at him one last time.
"See you, Jeremiah."
The engine started.
A moment later, the car pulled away and rolled down the quiet neighbourhood street.
Joey stood there watching until it disappeared around the corner.
Somewhere nearby, kids laughed and shouted, making the most of the final hours of summer vacation before school started again.
Eventually, Joey turned back to his own car.
He got in, started the engine, and drove away in the opposite direction.
Neither of them had anything left to say.
