Singer-songwriter Cal Folger Day, originally from D.C. but now a Brooklynite, paid us a visit recently for a live set and interview. Her latest recording, Drom-d'reau, has recently been released. Cal's wry sense of humor, evident both in her stage patter as well as her songs, belies the fact that she is a songwriter of uncommon depth and passion. Stylistically, she seems to channel some pre-war blues and country, 40's torchiness and a bit of Dylan, circa 1965, while remaining a thoroughly contemporary singer. For an unusual treat, catch her directing Six Children's Choruses (for choir and orchestra) by Bartok, on Friday, August 2nd, at Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn.

PSA: Have discovered horse meat in "Basement Floods EP"
It looks like over the past couple weeks, I may have sold you a quite-improperly burned CD called "Basement Floods EP". Nothing too naughty was leaked, but there are some pretty painful outtakes & also one song that's simply incorrect. How did this happen? What was I on?! Fa la la! C'est la vie! Sorry for the inconvenience, if that's what it was for you, and just drop a line and I'll have my butler send you the correct files.
She is the kind of natural performer who chats to the crowd during the intro to her song like it’s no big deal and then bursts into song at the exact perfect moment. Her voice had everyone kind of gaping and drooling, and thinking, “Does she have a CD player hidden in her jumper”? Her vocal control alone was worth witnessing but then you got to listen to her lyrics too which were always surprising and witty and current and timeless at the same time ... Not just because it was Valentine’s Day, but because they often perform together, Cal invited her fella, Myles Manley, on stage for a song. It was a joyous end to one of the most engaging and affecting gigs I’ve been to for a while now.

A guitarist and chanteuse with jazz leanings, whose vocal control and stage presence command attention. (The New Yorker)
