Don't you think it's funny how almost always Titans just can't help themselves when it comes to Warlocks? (Saint and Osiris, Wei Ning and Eriana, Shaxx and Felwinter, ect)

Just always seem to be drawn to each other yk?

What do Hunters get you might ask? Well that's simple: They have each other! It goes:

• meet under unlikely circumstances

• develop lifelong bond

• get into a stupid mess

• one of them dies in (or as a consequence of) said stupid mess

• the one left alive gets super traumatized, has a huge change to their entire personality makes the death become their main driving force, and then waits until they meet a new hunter so they themselves can die in a stupid mess and continue the cycle!

This is not to reflect any personal bias of us, it's just that everyone knows who Cayde is and information on Caliban is from ONE Hunter exotic.

Cayde-6 needs no introduction, but Caliban-8 may.

Caliban-8 was, to our knoweldge, the second Hunter Vanguard. Directly responsible for the death of Tallulah Fairwind thanks to a bad hand in a card game she played against an Ahamkara, that Caliban acted as dealer for. He took over Vanguard duties following this. He would then spend almost all his time in his office, throwing burning knives at the ceiling.

Tallulah/Tevis/Caliban.

i started writing this fic in 2019, dropped it when i dropped d2 and ive picked it back up in recent months, as i did d2

though playing d2 is much less a love of new lore lately, i have been..... very disappointed in the direction and execution of the story since Shadowkeep, both with the seasonal model, actual story and individual characters

anyway, that's a talk for another day, enjoy this snippet as i work on this monster of a fic + another oneshot for it all :)

Nettle-11 is out in the cosmodrome for six months and hasn't fired a single shot. The fallen will only engage if they can spot you, and Nettle prefers to keep her distance, using her sniper's scope to zoom in for better clarity while Dart works to tune into the communication frequencies.

They develop a routine. Every morning Dart wakes Nettle with a weather report. As the ghost scolds her into doing house keeping for their temporary shelter (they're small campsites really), they present any tower news that has come in. Dart likes doing different voices based on subjects. Together they go over any information from Caliban-8. There's not usually much but Dart says he's probably feeling guilty because he didn't have time to mentor her, because when they do get information, it's usually a bunch of forwarded reports.

After going over intel, they conceal the shelter and move out. Nettle-11 spends most of the day sitting in a sniper nest, watching fallen scurry about scavenging. She and Dart listen to the chatter, whispering to each other as Dart records, trying to translate everything.

Eventually the fallen depart. Nettle will sometimes follow them, creating small nests for future use. More often she returns to shelter where she writes a report with Dart for Caliban-8. Then she performs equipment maintenance before going to bed.

While the ghost looks to the stars keeping watch, the exo dreams of the Deep Stone Crypt.

A Brief History of the Hunter Vanguard

After the fall of the Iron Lords, the Speaker established the Consensus and the Vanguard. For them he sets the Warlock Vanguard (and Commander) as Osiris and the Titan Vanguard as Saint-14. The very first Hunter Vanguard would be Tallulah Fairwind.

She would go on to participate in the Great Ahamkara Hunt where the first Hunter Dare would be established between her and Caliban-8. Unfortunately, she loses and is killed by the Ahamkara, causing Caliban-8 becomes the new Hunter Vanguard much to his dismay.

It’s unknown who followed up behind Caliban or how many Hunter Vanguards followed, but it is said there’s been quite a few Hunter Vanguards. There have also been several instances of the position sitting empty for a while. The dares eventually lead to a Hunter Vanguard dying without any sign of their Dare.

Two years later, Andal and Cayde-6 make a Dare: a race to see who can get Taniks first, with the loser becoming Vanguard. Cayde-6 won and Andal Brask became the Hunter Vanguard for some time. Unfortunately, his time would be cut short when Taniks somehow returned to life and killed him. Cayde-6 would avenge him and become the Hunter Vanguard, only to be further plagued by Taniks coming back to life several more times.

During the events of Forsaken, Cayde-6 meets an unfortunate fate. He is no longer the Hunter Vanguard and the position stands empty, waiting for the victim of his Dare to step forward or for some Hunters to make their own Dare once again.
