so i just got around to reading the Groundhog Day AU fic and can i just say that I always, always forget that Uriel lives in my city lmao. Which mostly just means I want to ask her opinions on Important City Business, like the giant chunks of concrete falling off the Gardiner, and is Queen West the worst (yes), and how irritating Rafe probably was to her during the Ford years, and also to remind her that neglecting us got us a serial killer that no one caught for like a decade...

Hello, @calicovirus!  Uriel indeed lives in your city.  Now, the chunks of concrete, I’m pretty sure she’s tried to keep on top of as surreptitiously as she can, in the sense that she’s tried to minimize casualties and injuries as a result thereof.  As for Queen West, she avoids places that crowded and full of commercial ruckus (the worst), although Raphael loves such places.  I need you to clarify what you mean by “Ford years”: do you mean Ford as in President Ford in the U.S., or Ford as in when the motor company arrived in Canada?  I’m afraid I’m having difficulty directly connecting irritation from Raphael on both of those scores; can you clarify what you mean?  I’m not sure Rafe was paying much attention to either.  He’s always an irritation when he’s visiting from San Francisco, that’s just the way of it.  But she wouldn’t have it any other way, and he does eventually grow out of being a total ass.

The truth is, I -- too -- remain haunted forever by baby’s arm dick. 

I think Leupagus and I share a common sadness that the second Trek movie wasn’t enjoyable, and didn’t kick start our shared love of that fandom and reignite our drive to work on that story. But it lives in a shared file on google docs, which means hope springs eternal and all that. Plus I already had Spock’s four part revenge plot outlined.

random old-post-thoughts: i'm glad other people want a super petty Nightingale-Seawoll hate source. Like the whole "Alexander." "Thomas." thing is just. the pettiest. (also my Hamiltrash brain puts melodies to it which is hilar.) BUT re: Peter's nerdiness - I've always put it down to the "traditional" male/not-male divide in fandom, or at least Ye Olde LJ Times. Like he's probably been on some fan reddits but not on AO3, u know? info-collectiing/analytical vs transformative fandom etc.

I just remembered I forgot to answer this because yes, I completely agree with you about Peter and fandom, but I’d go a little further - I listened to an audio interview with BA (I think it was the ‘writing a bestseller’ podcast I linked to a while back) and he mentioned that before he started writing for Doctor Who, he was a fan of it in the sense that he watched it on TV but he wasn’t in fandom. And I think Peter is meant to be the same - he’s a fan of sci-fi/nerdy stuff, he consumes it, but he’s not out there thinking about it every second of his spare time, he probably drops into a fan reddit or two to look for game tips or see what people are seeing about a book but he’d be vaguely aware of stuff like AO3 if at all. I don’t think it’s even about the curative/transformative fandom divide so much as Peter not being the kind of person who lives his life in imaginary worlds that way. 

(I like to imagine Miriam Stephanopoulos’ Pratchett-reading wife is in fandom while Stephanopoulos just observes it all supportively but somewhat bemusedly, but that’s just because it amuses me.) 

Also: you have now made me imagine Nightingale and Seawoll doing a classic musical theatre petty “What Is This Feeling?” THIS IS WHAT DRIVES ME MAD ABOUT THIS OTHER PERSON duet (except, like, with less slash and more genuine exasperation) and it is hilarious.

Well, yes. Or more specifically, “ehhrrrrr”. From Arthur Dent to Harry Potter to Wooster to various Pratchett characters, I always thought they were saying “er” and actually saying the R-sound. “erm”, too. Now I know they were just saying “uh” and “um” like the rest of us and it’s blowing my mind.

Other things that blew my mind from that article: Parcheesi is pronounced pah-cheesi, like the actual name of the original game, Pachisi. The Korean name, Park, is Pahk. Burma and Myanmar shouldn’t have the r’s pronounced either. What the hell, England.

Well, Canada. Notably confused dialect there. :) Also, note, the dictionary has “er” as a pronunciation (not the British dictionary though), probably because of confused Americans making it common (and y’know, descriptivism over prescriptivism).

Yes, I actually found that one out when I was young, reading some book where the narrator’s reading The Wind in the Willows and figuring it out from context. Seeing draught beer in Canada also helped. Still ridiculous though. (Well, not as ridiculous as Worcestershire.)

After reading your last post and a whole other plethora of things about yourself on here, I've decided that you are one of the most interesting people that I've found on the internet/had the chance to interact with. If someone ever again asks me later in life, 'Who is/was the most curious person you've ever known?' You can bet your bottom that I'll be changing it from Spiderman (as my 10 year-old-self would have said) to irisbleufic on Tumblr. Kudos, as Spiderman is hard to beat. 💙

It brings into a play a kind of chicken-and-egg argument, you have to admit.  Did the constant and outlandish events make a writer of me, or did the fact I’m inclined to writing make me look at the events on a portentous scale?  Then again, if forces outside our ken regularly look at humans who engage in making art and say, Yeah, let’s allocate the big stuff to those ones, they’ll use it well, hopefully to comfort others in hardship and to teach—well, who knows.

I already straight up loathe this adaptation so I FEEL your reaction. Luckily I'm a books-only A Song of Ice and Fire fan so I'm used to the mental partitioning... But man do I feel you on not wanting to engage with the TV version. Or people who are excited for it. Take what time you need. If people give you shit send them to me - I've been defending book!Jaime Lannister for years, this is easy stuff haha.

My friend, you’re one of those formidable sorts from whom I hope to never take shit, so rest assured I’ll keep your offer in mind if a) anything happens, and b) I have too few spoons to deal with it.  Which, lately, has been…variable.

Funny thing about GoT with me is that I’ve only ever seen the television adaptation!  I doubt I’ll ever read the novels until I’m dead sure the series is finished.  That’s what I did with Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, anyway.

Partitioning is…not something my mind comes by honestly.  Or can do at all, in fact, in most cases.  It explains a lot about why I hard-line reject the portions of narratives (that I otherwise love) that piss me off and rebuild them.

it’s...not, surprisingly enough? It’s not Moffat who wrote it, the writer this time is also the one responsible for In The Forest Of The Night (the one where Clara’s class on a schooltrip, the one where they really badly handled mental illness) which I really didn’t like, so it’s very... odd?

I mean, I kinda wanna say the main factor in it being nice is Bill, and she is amazing and the actress is doing an amazing job but it was more than that, really the characterisation of the Doctor and the whole story, so...?
