@calonarang I adore these! I also really loved the seagull ones. Any chance we can see a process video? For study but also I think it would be super calming to watch haha
Unfortunately, I don’t record my process. But I can offer a step-by-step for this one, on account of it being a commission.
@ink--it #i genuinely thought this was traditionally done #love how good digital brushes have become at mimicking physical materials #awesome art
@paperbirds #OP. THIS IS. STIPPLING? OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD??#FAV #OP THIS IS FUCKING INSANE IM. HOLY SHIT THAT'S INCREDIBLE. AND YOU STIPPLED THIS!! #owls #NO SERIOUSLY THIS IS SO FUCKING COOL
I don’t want to mislead you, so here is as succinct a break down as I could manage. I’m usually more chaotic when doing art. I don’t tend to plan ahead much, unless it’s a commission or a larger project of sorts.
Firstly, I make a simple line sketch and plan the values. With stippling, the illusion of a darker shade is determined by the concentration of dots in one area -- with ‘white’ having no dots, and black having only dots.
1) Simple sketch
2) Value sketch
In Clip Studio Paint (go here for free trial) there is a default airbrush tool called Tone scraping. I believe most painting programs have something similar to this, including the airbrush in MS Paint. The only thing it does, is create many small dots.
You can vary the size and spread of the particles in the tool menu. Here are my settings for the owl, which was drawn at ~4000x4000 pixels and 300dpi. Vary the brush size to focus the intensity of the spray. The smaller the brush, the more concentrated tones you’ll get.
3) Draw the rest of the fucking owl
I’m bad with layers. I constantly merge them throughout and honestly prefer to paint on only one, if I can choose. However, this is fiddly work, and if you make a mistake, it’s easier to correct if you keep the main elements separate.
I used three layers here (background, owl, and shadows), and I still managed to draw on the wrong one a couple of times. I used the lasso tool to section off areas in which I wanted a sharper edge.
I didn’t use any solid white while for this, only black dots. I recently learned that to “erase” with the same brush, you can switch from the colour swatches to the transparent square underneath. I’m sure this was common knowledge to most Clip user, but it was news to me. This makes “digital stippling” a whole lot easier.
Hope this was helpful. If any of you do something similar, I’d love to have a peek!
Traditional forms of theater have existed in Indonesia for hundreds of years. Actors perform informal theater, a type of theater that does not take place on an actual stage. Performers act out stories for an audience, but the theater space usually consists of an open area outside. Actors wear elaborate costumes and dance to carefully choreographed skits, telling ancient stories to music played by a traditional orchestra. This mask represents "Rangda" (demon), worn during a traditional Balinese dance called the "Calonarang."
ArtFight Attack on @calonarang - Hope you like it, I am still pretty new to animation and I appologise for the low gif quality... I put an unmoving version with transparent background under the cut
OC belongs to them (obviously) >.<

Idk if its canon, but I felt like the murderbird trolls were definitely partners. Maybe not in a romantic sense, but in a queer sense either way
Their relationship was undefined. Like they never actually talked about relationship things, they just decided to move in together one day. They were a family, a very vague and undefined family, but family nonetheless.
I have been a little hesitant drawing them lately, since I decided I wanted to make a troll story (they were originally stolen from said story, but I thought I’d never actually make said story, so I dumped them into ARPG. But then I decided I wanted to after all. I would have regrets if it hadn’t been so darn fun to draw them). But making this story would require removing or transforming the burds (because ARPG and copyright stuff), and adding lots of other trolls (yay!). And also because the story I had in mind for them was kind of about how Tekla got her golden eye, and that would have happened BEFORE they got together (heck, they aren’t even friends before that point), and I thought it’d just make a mess if I drew them together now, if I was going to make the story.
Although, on the other hand... these two are kiiiiind of tailor made specifically as a sort of “fan service” for myself, personally, so...
Aw, fudge it, I’m drawing trolls.
First off I love your johto-dex project!! I don't know if you're planning on selling them ever, but I would love to own one if you eventually do :) Second, I think you skipped dunsparce!! He's #52 and he's my absolute favorite!! I think I'm the only one who noticed haha
Hey! I’m so glad you like my on-going project!
I definitely want to make a zine that collects all of the pieces in one place, like a hand-drawn pokedex! I’ve been thinking about possible ways to sell some of the individual lines, like sticker sheets or postcard prints. I’m so glad you’re interested! I’ll definitely look into some alternatives.
Also I haven’t forgotten precious lil’ Dunsparce. The order I arrange the Pokemon on the sheets I paint them on sometimes differs from the actual pokedex order because it’s easier for fitting them all on there or there’s a more fitting grouping to put the pokemon with. Dunsparce is on page 8, I’m currently starting on page 5, so you will see him in due time!
In the meantime, have a sketch:
“what a gracious little thing...”
Fanart for the amazing @calonarang Pink Diamond, such a good headcanon and design I love it!
Bonus: some sweaty pearl design in a lighter palette dunno
