Two different arches, two different upland burrowing crayfish, locally common in non turbulent spray cliff communities. The variability of red coloration through the gorge is increadible. Cambarus dubius is found in Ky, Tn, Va, Nc, Pa and Wv. The species is assumed to be a very difficult species to diliniate into its respected subsp. and is associated with site range specific species complex. In WV it is S4 and S3 in Ny. Its global rank will decrease once we have division in taxa. A good paper to read is 2010 ecology of Cambarus dubius Zj loughman et. al.
An Appalachian brook crayfish (Cambarus bartonii) moves stealthily through the leaf litter in Quarry Run.
One thing about the rainy weather we experienced on our vacation in WV, hordes of amazing, stripy snails appeared on the vegetation. My kids collected a fair number of empty shells by looking carefully at the ground near where the living snails were sighted. These guys came inside long enough to be scrutinized and photographed, then went back where they came from. Presumably they will be unimpressed by their new fame. I also found a dead crayfish on the path by the creek when I was painting. The surprise was, it was a stunning blue.
Later on we found this tiny pile of crunched up crayfish shells, apparently part of the digestive process of some water-side bird? I mean, it really looks like an owl pellet more than anything, but - surely not? There were other piles nearby that had all the regular reddish-brown crayfishbits. As if this unknown predator sorts its prey out by color. Nature is - just too weird sometimes. And I’m left standing over a pile of parts muttering “Bluuuuue! Pretttttttyyyyy!”
