CAMERON RUSSEL FOR VOGUE, FEB 2015 - PHOTOGRAPHED BY MARIO TESTINO.
Cameron Russell admits she won “a genetic lottery”: she's tall, pretty and an underwear model. But don't judge her by her looks. In this fearless talk, she takes a wry look at the industry that had her looking highly seductive at barely 16 years old.
I’d seen this TEDTalk several times scouring the Internet, but the title put me off. Only today, the 19 million views intrigued me enough to watch it, and I was surprised enough by Cameron Russel’s talk to feel a little ashamed.
It was refreshing to hear a young, yet seasoned model eloquently and deeply critique her industry and our society. It is rare to hear someone like Cameron, in such a position of privilege, recognise and speak profoundly about a ‘legacy of gender and racial oppression’ on which she cashed out on.
I think it was truly commendable of her to acknowledge the circumstances of her ‘perceived’ success, and those of others’ perceived failures; I only wish this was something less uncommon.
