Me to the therapist: ‘An alcoholic father is a very difficult thing to deal with. The emotional and physical abuse. It’s hideous, we understand. I preferred when he smoked. Oh, and then it turned out the smoking cost him his leg (gangrene) and killed him via lung cancer. Not the alcohol, after all.
I still ask: ‘What the fuck happened with him?’
And I will always think: He was just another lost, angry soul in this world.

Esophageal cancer
Yes, we all know about cancer but most of us are not familiar with esophageal cancer. Come let us know more about this cancer.
Esophageal cancer is a malignancy that develops in tissues of the hollow, muscular canal (esophagus) along which food and liquid travel from the throat to the stomach. The Esophagus or food pipe is the muscular tube that connects the throat with the stomach. It serves as a passage to deliver food and liquids into the stomach. It starts in the neck, passes through the chest, and has a short portion in the abdomen, before joining the stomach. It is approximately 25cms in length.
Symptoms
Unfortunately, symptoms generally don't appear until the tumor has grown so large that the patient cannot be cured. Dysphagia (trouble swallowing or a sensation of having food stuck in the throat or chest) is the most common symptom. Swallowing problems may occur occasionally at first, and patients often react by eating more slowly and chewing their food more carefully and, as the tumor grows, switching to soft foods or a liquid diet.
Causes
The exact cause is unknown. It develops when there is a mutation in the DNA which makes cells grow and divide in an uncontrolled manner.
The following factors increase the risk of oesophageal cancer:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Smoking
Barrett's esophagus -Having precancerous changes in the cells of the esophagus
Obesity
Consumption of alcohol
Undergoing radiation therapy
Treatment
Treatment for esophageal cancer is determined by the stage of the disease and the patient's general health. The most important distinction to make is whether the cancer is curable. If the cancer is in the early stages, a cure may be possible. If the cancer is advanced or if the patient will not tolerate major surgery, treatment is usually directed at palliation (relief of symptoms only) instead of cure.
Surgery
Chemotherapy
Radiation

How to prevent?
An assured way to prevent esophageal cancer is unknown. The precaution to reduce risks are
Quit smoking
Stop drinking alcohol
Exercise regularly
If gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is experienced, consult doctor immediately
Consume vitamin rich foods
The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which provides an opportunity for all of us to focus on breast cancer and its impact on those who have been affected by the disease not only in our local community but as a Nation as a whole.
