Candelarias, the festivity of light
In many places of Spain, February starts with the celebration of Las Candelarias. This festivity is related with Roman Lupercales (with which it shares its purifying character) and celebrated especially at the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
The center of this festivity are bonfires. In some towns as Casariche or Pedrera (Seville, Andalusia) are lit about 500. Many people gathers around them, offering food, dancing and playing differents and ancient games as pica la olla (a búcaro is thrown without being broken).
Along with the wood, an alegoric effigy is burned. It is related with social criticism and, usually, it represents a person. In Badajoz (Extremadura) is known as Marimanta.
In Tenerife (Canary Islands) the festivity of Candelarias has a special background. During February 2 it is celebrated a big party in honour of the Virgen de la Candelaria, patron of the islands. The feast day is marked by a solemn procession and a religious ceremony.
