Stopped by one of my favourite places today, Cannington Manor ❤️ For those of you who may not know but this is the place that is the inspiration for my Abbington Pickets novel series. My heart is definitely here. Where my grandma worked or 18!years and I spent a lot of my child hood here learning the history. Where my great grandparents got married, my parents got married, I got married, our daughter got married and I was baptized here, the list goes on and on. If you haven’t been there, you should go! They have a fair day on the long weekend of August and church service is every last Sunday of the month during the summer. They also do other fun things like candle nights and this year I heard they were doing something new. Schools always go there for tours at the end of the school year. Did you know… that The Abbington Pickets series is portrayed in the Saskatchewan prairies at the turn of the 20th century? Also did you know that it’s inspired by the Victorian Village of Cannington Manor and the pioneers who lived there. It’s a place that is close to my heart and I wanted to write a story depicting the time and place without copying their exact lives, but to present to my readers what happened back then- how they coped in difficult times, whether it be illness, harsh weather or an unexpected accident- they persevered with every situation. Times may have been trying back then but they were simpler times with integrity, morals and plain hard work. Ok, as promised I said I would give the answer to my question in yesterday post. All who did answer, is correct about the original name of the house. It is the Humphrey/Hewlett House built in 1888 which was located south west of Cannington Manor. Cannington Manor is indeed the inspiration for my novel, Jacob of Abbington Pickets, which has turned into a series with three books and counting. In my books this house belonged to the Howards, built by the Mathewson’s before them. Just as in real life, but the names were changed. Fun Fact Friday This is the Beckton Ranch, the inspiration for Goldenrod Ranch in my Abbington Pickets novel series. Here’s a little history behind the Ranch: Didsbury, also known as the Beckton Ranch which is east of Cannington Manor, Saskatchewan. Located SW 14-9-34. It was built in 1889 by the three Beckton Brothers who were from England. Billy, Ernest and Bertie Beckton who used part of an inheritance from their grandfather to buy the 2600 acres for Didsbury. It was a huge beautiful stone house, made with limestone, the biggest in the area, with 26 rooms. It had a room in the one end called the Rams Pasture which had a huge pool table which all the men hung out there. The house also had a ball room where many dances were held. Beckton were known for their lavish lifestyle and also their racing horses especially Jase Phillips who won many trophies. The Beckton wives would watch the races from the balcony on Didsbury, which the race track was located at Cannington Manor at the east end. Beckton money was distributed quite freely through out the Cannington district. The Beckton’s sold Disbury to Mr. Simpson, who later sold it to Thomas Taylor in 1910. It remained in his family until 1950’s. Sadly it was filled with grain for storage and eventually over time the house fell down. It is just a pile of rubble right now. Did you know that the All Saints Anglican Church in my books is really in Cannington Manor and the original building still stands today. It also is still being used. Once a month, during the spring to fall seasons for church services as well as for weddings and funerals. My great grandparents, parents, myself and our daughter were all married in that church. It was built in 1884, which makes it 136 years old! That’s pretty amazing, it’s been well kept over the years. When I was home last weekend, I took my grandma back to Cannington Manor and we had a picnic, walked about a bit looking at some of the buildings, such as the All Saints Anglican Church, the Malby House and the Carpenter house. We even went inside some and my grandma played the piano in the Malby house. My grandma used to work here as a guide and when I was young I would come here and help tell the history to people that came through. This is why I love history and wanted to write a historical novel using Cannington Manor as my inspiration. In my Abbington Pickets series I use places and buildings in the area (renaming them of course), especially the grand ones such as the Beckton Ranch, Humphrey/Hewlett House and Rosemount. We also stopped at the Humphrey Hewlett house to walk down the lane so my grandma could take a picture of me just as she did about 12 years ago.
