Chants D'Auvergne: Vol I, No. 2: Baïlèro
Baïlèro
(Joseph Canteloube, Songs d’Auvergne, 1923)

Kiri Te Kanawa reappears!
I couldn't remember her interpretation of my last dream track, so - as if to compensate - her indelible singing of this song glided into wakefulness today.
On this dismal Irish day, Kiri's sensuous Baïlèro conjures up a rare sunny summer from my teens, cycling rural local lanes, my Sony Walkman repeatedly playing her luscious album of Chants d'Auvergne.

'bailero' from 'chants d'auvergne', a collection of folk-song from the auvergne volcanic region of france, arranged by the french composer canteloube. it is sung in the auvergne dialect, 'occitan', and tells a story of lovers separated by circumstance - in this case a river - but it could apply to any star-crossed love. performed by netania davrath, this recording is delicate and touching. melancholy, sunny and transient as a summer's day.
