Flow Viz Group thoughts
Our group has debated extensively on what type of flow visualization we would like to do. We were torn between using the laser and examining the wake of the airfoil or using the Infrared camera to examine the properties on the wing. We initially had signed up last week for getting in the wind tunnel early in the week to prevent last minute testing. Unfortunately, another group had talked to a TA and called dibs on that time slot before the master time sheet was up. When we rescheduled for another slot on Thursday morning, we were told that there was a high chance we wouldn’t be able to test because the 500 level class gets priority in the wind tunnel. Now our only available time slot is on Friday morning for 2 hours, which doesn’t factor in time for installing the infinite wing. It’s really disappointing to see that because our group tried to get ahead, we fell utterly behind and now we will be forced to work on the presentation and analysis on the weekend. LESSON LEARNED: It is futile to try to get ahead.
We decided to use the IR camera to examine the infinite wing. I was extremely interested in exploring flow reattachment because I don’t know a lot about this area of interest and would like to see if there is always a specific angle of reattachment, or if it is in a range of angles. This is what our group intends to look at for our flow vis project. We will bring a cooler and ice packs and cool the wing down and keep a towel by to wipe off any liquid that may form on the wing right before we test. We do not want to run the tunnel too fast because this will just heat the wing up quicker and so we were considering running it around 11-13 m/s. Because we are looking for reattachment, we are really only looking for a change in color on the IR camera as we do our alpha sweep. Therefore, we wanted to start the test at a stalled angle, and bring the airfoil down at different intervals. After the first trial, we will turn off the tunnel and cool down the wing again with the ice packs for a few minutes(and possibly charge the camera because it seemed like it had a short battery life when we checked it out). We want to get at least 2 or 3 trials and if we miraculously get more time, we have a few other ideas of what to test.
Since there is another group after us who seem to not be using the infinite wing, we might have to end early so we do not cut into their time. What we hope to get out of our data is find a specific angle or a range in which the flow reattaches around the NACA 4412 at our Reynolds number. With tape placed over the wing, we also hope to determine the location at which the flow reattaches to the wing.
