Capote premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on 2 September 2005, before its official release on Truman Capote's birthday (30 September).
Based on Gerald Clarke's 1998 biography, with a screenplay by Dan Futterman and direction by Bennett Miller, the film was a commercial and critical success. Capote was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Keener), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Philip Seymour Hoffman received the Oscar for Best Actor.
