Captain China by Chi Wang and Jim Lai

GUYZ.  Not only did przed do an amazing last minute pinch-hit of my Wuxia Avengers RBB, she then wrote an SBB fic where Bucky is Chinese-American and his adorable family basically adopts Steve and it’s like a combination of my favorite triad martial arts tropes and 1930s New York Chinatown.  (!!!!)

Steve Rogers doesn't know much about Chinese culture when he makes a wrong turn in Chinatown.  But a chance meeting gives him not only a new friend, but an entry into a whole new world.  The more he learns from Bucky, the closer they get, until Bucky is so much more than a friend.   But when a Chinese gang goes after Bucky and his family, Steve knows he needs to stand up and make sure the man he loves doesn't lose everything.

Anyway, przed had originally sent a draft of the fic to me being like “can you check if the Chinese stuff scans?” and then my hand slipped and I drew smol Bucky and Steve practicing Wing Chun.

I’d *actually* wanted to draw a picture of Steve with Bucky’s family, but I couldn’t make it by the SBB posting deadline.  So... here is the belated family pic, @trappingsofzed!

Whilst reading Batman: Hush, I found an interesting looking read on Kindle Unlimited.

I found the first two volumes of the Captain China comic created and written by Chi Wang and drawn by Jim Lai. Here is the synopsis of the story:

"After 50 years of Cryogenic sleep, Captain China is revived in modern times to demonstrate China's achievement of world power in the 21st century. Created during the Great Leap Forward, this once great communist superhero must now exist in a modern time very different from the world he once knew. With new conflicts and threats rising, can he overcome all these obstacles and still be a symbol of the Great People’s Republic?"

I was curious of what direction the story would take. I've had rare exposure to Chinese comics. Dragon Tiger Gate might be the only one. The author describes what led to his creating the character of Captain China after the the first issue. You can also read the entire 12 issue arc on the Excel Comics website:

At first I was like “Dafuq? Why’d you literally rip off the Captain America backstory? Are you sure you’re not trolling?”

But then I think that’s actually the joke. They might be lampshading the whole “China makes bootleg everything” reputation by purposely being too damn obvious about being a Captain America ripoff? 

It’s a publicity stunt LMAO, both in-universe and in real life. Poor guy doesn’t actually appreciate being called “Captain China”...

From Captain China (2012) by Excel Comics, Captain China is basically Captain America but Communist. Awakening in the 21st Century, he finds that China is now more capitalist.

I think the English version is available on Amazon Kindle.
