Captain Death and his Privateer Terrible

There are name combinations that are just too weird to be true. Especially when the Captain is called William Death, the first Lieutenant Devil, the surgeon Ghost and the Privateer Terrible. And when you find out that their mooring in London was right opposite the Execution Dock, then you think you are in the world of nautical yarn and novels.

But this is not the case, as there really was a Privateer with this name. Captain Death was probably written De'ath, only Devil and Ghost are later creations. Because the first lieutenant’s name was Edward Catling. But let's go into the story of Captain Death and his privateer.

The Desperate Action Between The Terrible And Vengeance, December 1757 (it was 1756), by Robert Slann 1820

The Terrible was a 26/ 24- gun vessel- possibly a frigate or a converted merchantman. Her crew consisted of 200 men and she was probably actually located opposite the execution dock. On December 23rd 1756 she sailed off the coast of France near St. Malo where she was able to take a merchant ship- named as a prize after a hard battle. With this prize Death was on his way back to Portsmouth when another privateer got in the way on the 28th. This privateer was the Vengeance with 36 guns and a crew of 360 men. In the ensuing battle, the Terrible was apparently caught between the prize and her larger, more heavily armed opponent, with whom she exchanged broadsides as long as she could, caught fire several times and lost her main mast. It was too hot to last. The Terrible had claimed over a hundred lives. Only about twenty men and one uninjured officer were left to fight against her.  Captain Death had no choice but to surrender, but while the colors were being pulled down, he was killed by a musket ball from one of the Vengeance's tops.

The few survivors were taken prisoner to France and now the Terrible herself was a prize. The battle was described by Gentleman’s Magazine as ‘one of the most desperate and bloody engagements ever known’. The surviving crew also wrote the story, which was published as A genuine and faithful narrative of the unfortunate Captain William Death by Joseph Hart, along with the account of third lieutenant John Withe. London merchants opened a subscription at Lloyd’s coffee house in aid of Captain Death’s widow and his crew’s families.

The surviving members of Captain Death’s crew returned to Britain as part of a prisoner exchange in around August 1757. Some were reported as having joined the privateer Norfolk to try their fortunes against the French once again.

The Vengeance herself would be captured by HMS Hussar in January 1758 and spend the rest of her career in British service, so Captain Death and the Terrible were at least partly avenged.

She hated this. 

She hated the tension that lingered between the team. Ever since Secretary Ross introduced the Accords, nothing has been the same with the Avengers. Half of them barely spoke a word to one another while the other half argued about their decisions. 

Dominique remained silent for most of their discussions unless spoken to. She wasn’t one to argue, not to the people she cared deeply for. She respected everyone’s decision, even if they were on opposite sides. She didn’t care about the sides at that point. She just wanted the team to go back to the way it was before. She wanted to go back to being a family. 

That was what they were, right? A family? Family’s fight all the time, but surely they would overcome it. Right? 

As she sat down in the conference room in CIA facility in Berlin, the idea that they were a family slowly started to slip away no matter how hard she wanted to believe. Steve was across from her, softly rubbing his thumb on her hand in a circular motion. Neither uttered a word for a while. They just say there in silence, avoiding each other’s eyes. 

She knew Steve wouldn’t agree to the Accords, and he knew Dominique had already signed. They were divided. Though they wanted to try and keep the normalcy between them, it was hard with government officials constantly around, waiting to see if the woman could get her boyfriend to join them. 

Though if they really knew Dominique, they’d know she’s never do that to Steve. No matter the consequences. He was allowed to make his own decisions, even if it risked everything they worked so hard for. But it was better than changing his mind when he never tried to change hers. She loved him way too much to do that. 

“Tell me what you’re thinking,” Steve asked, breaking the comfortable silence that loomed over them. 

Dominique shrugged, shaking her head slightly. “Nothing.” Don’t lie to him, she thought. But she couldn’t help it. As difficult their situation already was, she would hate to make things worse. 

Besides, she sucked at lying, especially to him. 

“Dom...” Finally, they both met each other’s eyes. She saw the concern and sincerity in his, and a hint of sadness. God, she wanted nothing more than to not see that. It tugged at her heart and that was the last thing she needed right now. 

She pulled her hand away from his, causing Steve to frown, his head slightly tilted to the side. “Don’t,” Dominique murmured, barely audible for him to hear. “Don’t look at me like that. I can handle everyone else looking at me like that, but not you.” He nodded, though the frown still remained on his face. “I just hate this... A lot.”

“I know. Me too.”

And just like that, the silence took control once again.

▸ how did they they meet? they met on the quinjet that took them to the helicarrier in the first avengers film. super awkward babies, but hey... gotta start somewhere am i right?

▸ who developed romantic feelings first? i think both did. it was slow and steady, but they def had a connection from the start. it just took them a while to realize that and actually act on it.

▸ who is their biggest “shipper?” r o b i n!!!! aside from ae, she’s hands down the #1 fan of captain death. gladly die for them and would punch anyone who disagreed.

▸ when did they have their first kiss and under what circumstances? so im debating on this bc i’m not 100%, but they’d def kiss at the very end of catws. either in the hospital where steve’s recovering or at the end of the film. or, who even knows, maybe i’ll go off on my own tangent and give them a different scene to work with. idk i’m just winging it whoops.

▸ who confessed their feelings first? steve since he’s a baby.

▸ what was their first official date? technically it’s in catws. dom and steve were both alone at the smithsonian so she or steve ( probs dom ) asks if they’d wanna just hang out for the rest of the day... so it’s not really a date, but its soft and cute so it’s a date.

▸ how do they feel about double dates/group dates? same thing with sam and robin, they don’t mind it. they’re very cool with being around other people and still getting their own one on one time.

▸ what do they do in their down time? when they’re not out saving the world every other day, they’re most likely just out and about or chilling at their place. something v normal tbh.

▸ what was the first meeting of parents as an official couple like? since steve’s parents are dead, him meeting dom’s was super nerve-racking. he wanted them to like him, but he was nervous since he’s supposed to be 100 years old, but dom reassures him that they’ll love him just as much as she does. ofc they do, and they welcome him pretty quickly. dom’s parents are super nice and caring so they instantly added him to the family.

▸ what was their first fight over and how did they get past it? honestly, they don’t have many “fights”. like hardly any. i guess in the first avengers film, steve’s not understanding why dom’s there if she’s not willing to fight loki and dom’s like “woah woah im not gonna kill anyone” so that’s basically their “first fight”. but they got past it when he understood her more and why she doesn’t use her powers.

▸ which one is more easily made jealous? they’re not v jealous people. maybe steve, but not in a super noticeable way. like maybe his jaw clenches if a guy stares at dom the wrong way. something subtle and hard to miss if not paying attention.

▸ what is their favorite thing to get to eat? anything that they don’t make because they’re shitty cooks and thats a fact.

▸ who’s the cuddly one? what’s their favorite cuddling position? they’re not super duper cuddly, but they’ll hold each other at night while they sleep like spooning. steve is def the big spoon.

▸ are they hand holders? again, not really. sometimes when things get too much, they’ll hold their hand as a sense of comfort and way to ease tension. they don’t hold hands while walking down a street or anything like that. it’s more of a deeper level kind of thing.

▸ how long do they wait before sleeping together for the first time? what’s the circumstances? less than a year of dating. they take their relationship super slow and they both learn things along the way with their relationship so they dont wanna rush into things.

▸ who tops? steve lol dom would NEVER top.

▸ what’s the worst first they’ve ever gotten into? their first time dom goes into steve’s apartment in catws bc fury shows up their half dead, dom gets shot, fury almost dies, and steve’s best friend is wearing eye liner so lol good times.

▸ who does the shopping and the cooking? neither does the cooking so they go shopping together.

▸ which one is more organized and prone to tidiness? they’re both pretty tidy and organized.

▸ who proposes? steve. he basically pulls out a simple wedding band and asks her while they’re supposed to be out hiding from the government after the accords shit goes down.

▸ do they have joined bachelor/bachelorette parties or separate? since they’re on the run, they don’t have either. if they weren’t, probably together.

▸ who is the best man/maid of honor? any other groomsmen or bridesmaids? again, on the run. but if they weren’t, sam and robin as the best man/maid of honor. tony would be a groomsman while nat would be a bridesmaid.

▸ big ceremony or small? super small definitely. 

▸ do they have a honeymoon? if so, where? since they don’t, i think they’d travel somewhere warm and where they can do a lot of hiking. maybe near the grand canyon? i think they’d enjoy that a lot.

▸ do they have children? how many? in a v perfect world where everything is happy, they’d have a daughter named after someone special to both of them :’)

Dominique was out of her element. She knew it, Natasha knew it, Steve knew it, hell even Robin knew it.

After the battle of New York two years ago, the brunette did her best to stay away from fighting. Director Fury was reluctant at first because he wanted her to expand her strength and not conceal it. Nevertheless, he agreed, but only if the woman continued to test her limits and train within S.H.I.E.L.D. just in case they needed her abilities on a mission as a last resort. And for the past two years, that was what she did with Robin alongside her taking notes of her progress.

Now here she was, covered ash and smoke in one of Sam and Robin’s spare rooms. Her chestnut hair wild and untamed, clothes torn and ruin, but not a single scratch or bruise across her deep brown skin. She figured that was only perk about her powers, being able to heal any internal and external injuries within a matter of seconds, no matter how life threatening.

But even with that, Dominique still didn’t feel cut out for the mission. Taking down a corrupted Nazi organization within S.H.I.E.L.D. all the while the assassin, the Winter Soldier as Natasha referred him to, could show up at any given minute? Yeah, that wasn’t something she was interested in doing. Dominique wasn’t at the point where she felt comfortable going on missions with the kind of abilities she possessed. Even with all the training and tests, they weren’t enough for what she was about to do.

A presence of life pulled her out of doubtful thoughts. She looked up from the floor to find Steve leaning on the doorframe, a worrisome look on his face. He had a hand raised, probably to knock on the door, but it fell back to his side once he remembered that it was unnecessary since she already knew he was there. “May I come in?” He asked in an unsure voice, not wanting to step over any boundaries. Without hesitation, Dominique nodded, making room for him to take a seat next to her on the bed she currently sitting on. Once he did, the brunette went back to having her eyes back to the floor, averting his gaze, which he didn’t seem to mind. “How are you holding up?”

She wanted to lie, to put on a brave face and not share any of her concerns in front of the man who was the symbol of bravery to the entire world. Call it cowardice if you will, but she couldn’t, not with Steve. Her heart wouldn’t allow herself to lie to him. “Not well, honestly.”

He sighed in a disappointed manor, directed towards himself rather than her. “I’m sorry you got involved in this.”

Dominique shook her head immediately, “Don’t apologize, Steve, it’s not your fault.”

Steve shouldn’t have blamed himself for her joining him and Natasha on the run from Hydra. She could’ve turned and run in the other direction if she wanted to, and she sure did. But deep down, there was a part inside of her that couldn’t live with herself if she did. She was tired of running away from everything that terrified her. So in the end, it was her choice to be in the position she was now.

“I’ll be fine, you don’t need to worry about me,” she assured him. It would be best on both sides if they remained focus for what was about to come. Their situation would only get more complicated if feelings were involved.

The super soldier, on the other hand, wasn’t on the same page. He couldn’t help himself for constantly making sure she was okay. Steve cared deeply for Dominique, whether he admitted it or not. “But I do worry about you, Dom.”

She finally brought her brown eyes to his blue ones, finding him already looking at her. If they were in different circumstances, the woman’s heart would’ve bursted out of her chest. But now, she was more afraid than anything. “We both know I’ll be safe.”

It was true, they both knew that nothing could really happen to her. Either way, Steve didn’t let that statement stop him. “Yeah, but I just want you to know that you’ll always be safe with me.”

And for a small second, the fear inside her washed away and was replaced with warmth and comfort. She cherished those short yet sentimental moments with him. The way he made her heart beat at a faster pace, the sincere and meaningful look in his eyes. The way he made her forget about everything else in the world whenever he was around.

That only ever happened around Steve. And the aforementioned man felt the same way around her.

once they do tho, it’s very very cute, soft, and slightly awkward but in a good way

dom literally does the most™️ to protect steve when they’re in battle mode. she literally jumps in front of him and takes 99.9% of the damage just to keep him safe

steve lowkey hates it because yannoe dom still does feel pain and all that jazz, but dom is like i’m okay i’ll heal so it’s all good

prior to aou, steve meets her parents and he is so fucking nervous about it like it’s insane. he keeps asking dom if they like him it’s adorable

dom asks steve questions about his family from time to time, including bucky

she knows he doesn’t talk much about that so she never pushes him or anything

they rarely fight???? even in cacw when they’re both on different sides, dom and steve never argue with each other or anything???
