November 18th, Happy Birthday Captain Hamstern!
Captain Hamstern is the leader of the pirate crew known as the Seahams. He is a big, tall and fat hamster. His fur is brown around the back and a big part of his body, except for the belly which follows an oval cream circle all the way under his eyes (except for a few brown marks that are similar of a mustache or scars), and a darker brown in the end of the ears and cheek puff hair, as well as two big markings that resemble eyelashes. His actual eyelashes are also noticeable, almost as if he uses mascara for them. Regarding his fur, it is also noticeable the puff of hair between his eyes and the one that comes out of his ears. Overall, he is a really hairy hamster. However, the physical differences with the standard Ham-Ham do not end there: his sclera is yellow, and unless he is surprised, they're usually tinier and more narrow than usual; his lips are big and dry and his nose is round and brown. Captain Hamstern is clothed, wearing a full attire topped with a pirate hat and a sabre.
Captain Hamstern is, obviously, the captain of the crew and all his crew members are loyal to him. He also works as the helmsman. He plays main singer in his band.
Captain Hamstern's Japanese name is Hamukukku, which is a pun translated as “Hamcook”, or the famous Captain James Cook. It can also be related to Captain Hook, Peter Pan's actual pirate that kidnaps children. In the dub of the Ham-Ham Games OVA, he’s referred to as Captain Hamcook by Bijou. This is possibly a mistake on the dubber’s part or it is possible that the translators for the Ham-Hams Games video game are in the wrong and his actual dub name should be Hamcook. We’re using Hamstern since Hamcook was only mentioned once in the dub and never again.
He was introduced on the third Hamtaro movie, “Miracle in Aurora Valley”, along with the rest of his crew. After that, he made an appearance on Hamtaro Ham-Ham Games for the Game Boy Advance as a member of Team Seahams. Funnily, he does not appear in the related OVA, according to Hamberto, he went ahead to practice for the games.
Relationships
Captain Hamstern does not have any known crush, however, he is clearly a ham of the sea, and being so gallant, there's no doubt he has a few ham girls waiting for him at each port the pirate crew visits.
If anything we can say that he has a real small crush on Bijou.
Episodes
Movie 3 – Miracle in Aurora Village
Captain Hamstern is the main antagonist of the movie, battling Hamtaro on the Grand Prix to obtain the Snow Princess. He hates the cold, so he doesn't want her to pray for snow.
This should be all! We wish the most adventurous captain a happy birthday!
Today is Captain Hamstern’s Birthday (11/18)
Captain Hamstern is the main antagonist of the third Hamtaro movie that captures Bijou so that she doesn’t pray for snow since he believes it’s cold enough as it is. Why he doesn’t move to a different place is still a mystery considering he came to Aurora Valley thinking it was Rorora Valley where a great treasure is supposed to be hidden.
The great captain was inspired by his dad and his grandfather to take up piracy because they themselves were the beloved pets of pirates themselves. In Ham Ham Games, Captain Hamstern usually takes a back seat for his crew to shine except for in some events that need strength or bulk such as the Hammer Throw and Hurdles.
While Hamstern’s English name doesn’t have any famous equivalents (Unless you count Captain Stern from Pokemon), his Japanese name, Hamcook, is from Captain James Cook, who was a famous captain and cartographer making extensive maps of Hawaii and New Zealand.
An interesting fact is that in the English dub for the Ham Ham Games OVA is that Bijou calls out that the ship is Captain Hamcook’s ship and not Hamstern’s. There’s a possibility that his name would have gone unchanged but the English translation team for the game might have not been sent notes on it and/or it was a mistake with the script writing for that episode.
